Job summary

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to provide technical expertise on mechanical and plumbing systems, with a primary focus on water quality and public health. You’ll review plans, perform field inspections of HVAC and water systems, assess risks, and collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to support regulatory compliance.

This position requires a NYS Professional Engineer license and at least four years of relevant experience;

Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of full-time mechanical engineering experience.
  • Valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License maintained for duration of employment.
  • Masters degree in mechanical engineering may substitute for one year of experience.
  • Eligibility for Assignment Levels II/III requires significant project leadership experience.

Responsibilities

  • Review engineering plans, specs, and documents for mechanical/plumbing systems related to water safety.
  • Conduct field inspections of HVAC, cooling towers, and building water systems.
  • Identify risks in engineered systems that could contribute to waterborne disease transmission.
  • Perform technical investigations and root-cause analyses of building water systems.
  • Develop technical guidance, SOPs, and program materials on water safety and building systems.
  • Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and stakeholders to ensure compliance.
