Job summary

MD in Baltimore, MD, seeks a full‑performance laboratory scientist in Environmental Sciences to perform and report tests on environmental/food samples using approved methods. You will analyze results and contribute to public health initiatives with accuracy and compliance.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in a science field and at least two years of lab experience, with preferred expertise in PCR and MALDI-TOF systems and ISO/IEC 17025 context.

Qualifications

Main Purpose of Job

This position functions as a full-performance laboratory scientist in the Division of Environmental Sciences. This position performs, analyses, interprets, and reports test results on environmental and/or food samples submitted to the State Public Health Laboratory using incubations, digestions, extractions, and analyte quantification through approved FDA, EPA, CDC, and/or Standard methods. This testing is performed as part of the Laboratories Administration's activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland in conjunction with State and Federal funded public health initiatives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:�� A�Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological or multi-matrix samples; or two years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.

1. 1. Candidates may substitute additional graduate education at an accredited college or university�at the rate of 30 credit hours in the above noted disciplines for each year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.
2. 2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience in the validation, operation, maintenance, and/or application of food testing on the ABI 7500 Real-Time PCR system, Bruker Biotyper MALDI-TOF, or Panther Fusion Plus automated PCR system
• Experience analyzing samples using FDA and AOAC-approved food testing methods
• Experience working within an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited quality assurance system, with a strong understanding of laboratory quality standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices
