Job summary

Montana Office Of State Public Defender seeks a Managing Attorney to oversee public defender services in assigned regions. You will manage complex criminal defense matters, mentor attorneys, hire staff, and ensure compliance with practice standards while maintaining effective client representation.

You will collaborate with prosecutors, judges, and community partners to advance indigent defense and uphold constitutional rights.

Qualifications

• The candidate must hold a J.D. and be admitted to the Montana State Bar.
• Experience leading public defender programs or criminal defense teams is preferred.
• Strong leadership, budgeting, and strategic planning skills are essential.

Responsibilities

• Oversee public defender services within assigned regions and manage complex cases.
• Hire, supervise, and mentor public defenders and support staff.
• Ensure compliance with practice standards and maintain client caseloads.
• Develop relationships with prosecutors, judges, and other stakeholders.
• Direct administrative management and oversee contract services.
