Job summary

The Oklahoma Indigent Defense System (OIDS) seeks a full-time Defense Counsel in the Non-Capital Trial Division, Woodward office. You will represent indigent clients in state court at the trial level across felony, misdemeanor, juvenile, traffic, and wildlife cases, delivering competent legal advice and zealous advocacy.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate and good standing with the State Bar of Oklahoma.
• Willing to travel as required.
• Experience in trial and appellate contexts preferred.
• Ability to provide zealous advocacy.

Responsibilities

• Performs case management activities and maintains complete files of pleadings and orders.
• Communicates with clients about plea negotiations and post-judgement proceedings to aid informed decisions.
• Obtains pertinent information from client’s friends and family without disclosing privileged data.
• Conducts investigations relating to the client’s guilt or innocence and potential sentences.
• Collects and maintains evidence per standards and laws.
• Prepares for trial by filing pretrial motions and developing defense strategy with client input.
• Conducts legal research to briefing arguments on motions.
• Prepares for jury selection and develops questions to assess juror suitability.
• Preserves legal error for appellate review where applicable.
• Serves as Co-Counsel as assigned and provides consultation to other attorneys.
• Performs administrative duties as needed.
