Job summary

The City of Pittsfield's Office of the Building Commissioner seeks a Local Building Inspector to review permit applications, plans and specifications and issue permits.

Under supervision, the Inspector enforces the Massachusetts Building Code, performs inspections, and maintains permit records and inspection reports.

Hours are 7:30am–3:00pm, Monday–Friday, 35 hours/week, with starting pay of $30.87/hour and increases to $44.01/hour.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Five years of experience supervising building construction or design, or a two-year associate degree in a related field, or equivalent.
• Knowledge of building materials, construction requirements, fire prevention, ventilation, safe exits, energy requirements of the Massachusetts Building Code.
• Certification by the Board of Building Regulations and Standards (780 CMR 110.R7).
• Continuing education credits required to maintain Building Official certification.
• Massachusetts Class D driver's license.
• Ability to interact with customers cordially and professionally.
• Experience writing cost estimates and construction contracts.
• Strong interpersonal skills, conflict resolution and problem solving.
• Highly organized self-starter able to work independently.

Responsibilities

• Performs inspections and issues inspection reports and certificates.
• Enforces the State Building Code and applicable statutes, rules, and ordinances.
• Assists the Building Commissioner in duties.
• Inspects new and existing buildings and structures.
• Reviews and approves plans and specifications for new or renovated buildings.
• Issues permits and maintains electronic permit records.
• Writes and maintains inspection reports and violation notices.
• Investigates building code and zoning violation complaints and enforces corrections.
• Performs other local building inspector duties as assigned.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Two-year associate degree in building construction or design

Board of Building Regulations and Standards certification

Continuing education credits for Building Official certification

Massachusetts Class D driver's license

Customer service/courteous communication

Cost estimation and construction contracts
