Job summary

Rock Island Auction Company (RIAC) is seeking a part-time Shipping & Warehouse Associate to carefully prepare, pack, and ship firearms, weapons, and historic collectibles after each auction.

You will build crates, assist during auctions, and provide strong customer service while maintaining safety and compliance with firearms handling. This role offers 20–30 hours per week with growth opportunities.

Qualifications

Shipping & Warehouse Associate efficiently prepares and packs auction items for timely shipment to buyers after auction. This position plays a critical role to deliver customer service excellence by meeting company standards to ensure auction items do not suffer damage during shipment/transit. This position assists with auction set-up, moving inventory, and general warehouse duties.


Essential Job Functions


  • Prepares and packs shipments while meeting company standards of excellence for safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency.

  • Builds custom wooden crates for specific auction items to withstand rough shipment/transit and weather elements.

  • Ships auction items timely to buyers post-auction while meeting company standards of excellence for customer service.

  • Assist and escort trade workers onsite, including but not limited to, electricians, plumbers, and pest control.

  • Assists with on-site auctions.

  • Pre-auction – Assists with preview floor layout and display set-up including handling, adjusting, and moving firearms, large props, display racks, and display cases.

  • Auction – Delivers customer service excellence with professional conduct and positive attitude; assumes and acts as building security, as assigned.

  • Post-auction – Assists with disassembly including handling, adjusting, and moving firearms, large props, display racks, and display cases.

  • Performs general warehouse duties such as painting, cleaning, sweeping, trash removal and disposal, and inventory control by moving and handling auction items throughout facility.

  • Works expected overtime and required auction weekends (approximately 6 per year).

  • Participating in phone bidding duties during auctions as required.

  • Completes other duties, tasks, and projects, as assigned.

Education and Experience

This vital role works with care and caution to ensure clients receive auction items in the exact condition upon purchase.
Strong communication skills are essentialas this role involves significant client interaction during auctions by assisting with phone bidding, speaking with clients onsite, and handling related requests.

This is a part-time position requiring 20-30 hours per week. Hours will be scheduled during RIAC's standard hours of operations: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. CST with overtime and weekend hours, as needed.

What does a typical day look like?



  • Post-auction, will spend 90% of your day shipping items to winning bidders. Must handle all collectibles carefully and in a respectful manner. Will build custom crates, as needed, for shipping.

  • During auctions, assist with client interaction, including phone bidding, speaking with clients onsite, and other related duties as required.

  • When trade workers are onsite, assist and escort them as needed.

  • Move inventory to the shipping department.

  • General labor and some warehouse maintenance required, such as painting, cleaning, sweeping, organizing and taking inventory.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualified candidates meet the following requirements:



  • Ability to work in a safe manner;

  • Strong attention to detail and keen organizational skills;

  • Strong communication skills, both in person and over the phone;

  • Must have a positive attitude and be highly motivated;

  • Some computer work; must be comfortable using a computer and learning our software program;

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required;

  • Must be 18 years or older;

  • Prior shipping/warehousing experience is a plus.


Physical Requirements


Regular moving, transporting, and lifting of 25 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Significant standing and walking for prolonged periods up to 100% of the time with frequent ascending, descending, or positioning self to maintain moving and transporting consignor items (bending, kneeling, stooping, etc.). Must be able to constantly communicate and exchange accurate information both verbally and written. Must be able to detect, identify, inspect, observe, perceive and assess shipping production operations. Constantly operates and uses computer and other relevant equipment and machinery. Constantly works with and around firearms, bladed weaponry, and valuable collectibles.
