Job Summary

The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking a PT Instructor, Paralegal Studies for the Paralegal Studies Program at Chabot College in Hayward.

The Paralegal Studies Program seeks a knowledgeable and student‑centered instructor to teach a course introducing the use of technology in the legal profession. The ideal candidate will have practical experience with legal software, including current versions of Westlaw, Microsoft® Word, Excel®, and PowerPoint®, as well as specialized legal applications used for case management, document preparation, timekeeping, billing, and electronic discovery. They will also have strong familiarity with standard office applications, and a clear understanding of the ethical considerations surrounding technology in legal practice. This role supports the program’s mission of preparing students for modern, technology‑driven legal environments.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Teach Legal Technology — Deliver engaging instruction on legal office hardware, software, and specialized applications;
• Develop Course Materials — Create lectures, assignments, assessments, and hands‑on exercises aligned with program outcomes;
• Provide Practical Training — Guide students through real‑world tasks using Microsoft Office and legal‑specific software tools;
• Teach Ethical Use of Technology: Integrate discussions and activities related to confidentiality, data protection, and professional responsibility;
• Support Student Success: Offer academic support, maintain regular office hours, and provide constructive feedback;
• Collaborate with Program Faculty: Participate in department meetings, curriculum development, and program assessment;
• Maintain Current Knowledge: Stay informed about emerging legal technologies and industry standards.

Minimum Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for disciplines on this list are specifically named bachelor’s degree(s) or higher and two years of professional experience, and/or other specifications as noted, or specifically named associate degree(s) and six years of professional experience.

Evidence of understanding of and responsiveness to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, racial and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity‑minded practices within the classroom.

Desirable Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, Law, or a related field; J.D. preferred;
• Professional experience as a paralegal, legal assistant, attorney, or legal technology specialist;
• Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft® Word, Excel®, and PowerPoint®;
• Familiarity with legal software such as case management systems, e discovery tools, or document automation platforms;
• Ability to teach ethical and professional standards related to technology in legal practice;
• Commitment to community college students and diverse learning environments;
• Teaching experience at the community college level;
• Experience training others in legal software or office technology;
• Knowledge of current trends in legal technology, cybersecurity, and digital practice management.
