Job summary

Long Beach City College invites applications for a part-time lecturer in Hip Hop Dance History (Dance 19, 3 units). We seek a scholar-practitioner with knowledge of Afro-diasporic dance forms and a commitment to inclusive excellence, able to teach a course addressing popping, locking, breaking, and related styles.

The hire date is Fall 2026 with responsibilities beginning Spring 2027. Candidates should demonstrate experience teaching diverse student populations and be ready to develop curriculum

Qualifications

• Master’s in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, or equivalent.
• Three or more years of teaching Hip Hop Dance History in lecture-based courses or equivalent.
• Experience with Student Learning Outcomes and assessment.
• Ability to develop interdisciplinary curricula and engage diverse student populations.

Responsibilities

• Deliver on-campus Hip-Hop Dance History lectures for Dance 19 (3 units).
• Create a dynamic learning environment and engage students from diverse backgrounds.

ABOUT THE POSTION:

The Long Beach City College Dance Program invites applications for a part-time lecturer for a candidate specializing in Hip Hop Dance History: Dance 19 (3 units). We seek an active and forward-thinking scholar or scholar-practitioner who has a special awareness of global perspectives and has proven commitment to inclusive excellence. The lecturer for this course should be knowledgeable of Afro-diasporic dance forms, street dance lineage, and culture. They should demonstrate scholarly, creative, or professional contributions to hip hop dance and culture; expertise in culturally responsive pedagogy and interdisciplinary teaching; and evidence of curriculum development in dance studies or hip hop-related courses. This course appeals to a broad student body and should include forms such as popping, locking, breaking, rocking, turning, freestyle, krumping or jooking. The successful candidate will lecture for an on-campus Hip-Hop Dance History course. The candidate must demonstrate experience in teaching students from diverse ethnic socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds who have diverse identities and varying levels of proficiency.

The anticipated hire date for this position is Fall 2026 with teaching responsibilities beginning in the spring semester of 2027.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis,

OR the equivalent

Desirable Qualifications

• Three (3+) years of teaching experience of Hip Hop Dance History in lecture-based courses in the community college, UC system, California State University system or conservatory teaching Hip Hop Dance History is required for this position.
• Working knowledge of and experience with Student Learning Outcomes and assessment
• Experience with interdisciplinary and community engagement
• Ability to prioritize tasks, establish and meet deadlines
• Work cooperatively with full time faculty, staff and administrators
