Job summary

Coast Community College District seeks an Adapted Kinesiology instructor for part‑time teaching assignments at Orange County campuses. The role focuses on adapted physical education courses, including aquatics, strength, balance, conditioning and aerobics.

The position requires a California CCC credential and a relevant Master’s degree with experience elevating inclusive education for diverse adult learners. Regular participation in classes and adherence to department outlines are expected.

Qualifications

• Valid California Community College instructor credential, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990).
• Master’s in physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education.
• Bachelor’s degree in any of the above and Master’s in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy.
• Combination of education and experience at least equivalent to the above; submit Equivalency if used.
• 15 semester units of upper division or graduate study in adapted physical education.
• Evidence of sensitivity to, understanding of, and ability to manage the classroom and diverse student populations.

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction in adapted physical education classes including adapted aquatics, strength and balance, stretch, cardiovascular fitness, and aerobics.
• Maintain current knowledge in subject matter.
• Assess students' physical and perceptual motor needs, progress, expectations, goals to develop baseline information for placement and feedback.
• Provide specialized instructional techniques through individual or group sessions.
• Assess students' progress, expectations, goals, and measure impacts.
• Develop or recommend specialized equipment, goals and objectives for improving students' motor skills.
• Direct instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides to meet student needs.
• Maintain professional conduct and ethics.
• Apply state and federal guidelines related to teaching individuals with disabilities.
• Fulfill part‑time faculty responsibilities, teach all scheduled classes, keep records, and submit grades on time.
• Provide instruction in accordance with curriculum and course outlines.
• Maintain current knowledge in subject matter areas.
• Fulfill professional responsibilities of part‑time/temporary faculty.
• Teach all scheduled classes and maintain accurate records.
• Assignments may include day, evening, weekend, online and/or off‑campus classes.

Performance Responsibilities

Teach courses, provide oversight, secure and work with volunteers and aids, and promote the adapted physical education program.

Adapted Kinesiology Teaching Responsibilities

1. Provide instruction in adapted physical education classes including but not limited to adapted aquatics, strength and balance, stretch, cardiovascular fitness, and aerobics.
2. Maintain current knowledge in subject matter.
3. Assess students' physical and perceptual motor needs, progress, expectations, goals, etc. for the purpose of developing baseline information for placement, program development, and feedback to students.
4. Provide specialized instructional techniques through individual or group sessions designed to meet the educational needs of students.
5. Assess students' progress, expectations, goals, etc. and measure impacts.
6. Develop, or make recommendations for specialized equipment, goals and objectives for the purpose of improving students' motor skills.
7. Direct instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective instruction to meet individual student needs.
8. Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
9. Apply state and federal guidelines as related to teaching individuals with disabilities.
10. Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a part‑time faculty member including, but not limited to, teaching all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; following department course outlines; keeping accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; and submitting student grades according to established deadlines.
11. Provide instruction in accordance with established curriculum and course outlines.
12. Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
13. Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
14. Fulfill professional responsibilities of a part‑time/temporary faculty member.
15. Teach all scheduled classes.
16. Maintain accurate records.
17. Assignments may include day, evening, weekend, on‑line and/or off‑campus classes.

Minimum Qualifications

2. Master’s in physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education.
3. Bachelor’s degree in any of the above and Master’s in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy.
4. Combination of education and experience at least equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency.
5. 15 semester units of upper division or graduate study in adapted physical education.
6. Evidence of sensitivity to, understanding of, and ability to manage the classroom environment and effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds.

Licences and Certifications

Desirable Qualifications

1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong organizational skills.
2. Evidence of the ability to plan, organize, and administer an adapted physical education program.
3. Ability to work collaboratively.
4. Water Safety Instructor Certification and Lifeguard Certification.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is on a part‑time, temporary basis and contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

Physical Demands

Requires the ability to function in a classroom, office, gymnasium or outdoor environment performing work of primarily active nature with requirement to utilize large motor skills. Requires the ability to frequently carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting only occasionally, walking and standing are required regularly. Requires the ability to use hearing and speech to make presentations to groups and carry on conversations over the phone and in person. Requires speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one‑on‑one and small group settings, on the phone, and to distinguish sound prompts from various types of equipment. Requires near visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens. Requires sufficient hand/arm/finger dexterity to retrieve work materials, operate a personal computer keyboard, and operate standard office equipment. Requires the ability to lift, pull, push or move up to 25 pounds. Requires the ability to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, turn/twist, balance, and reach overhead.

Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed on a basketball court, classroom or office setting under general supervision and with appropriate climate controls. Travel, early morning, evening, and weekend work is required.

Salary

Based on Lecture Hour Equivalent (LHE) in accordance with the current Part‑Time Faculty Salary Schedule.
