Carteret County Government is seeking a Part-time District Coordinator to join the Parks & Recreation team. Do you love sports and have great organizational skills? Then, the Part-time District Coordinator job may be the role for you!

Performs intermediate technical work planning, coordinating, and implementing athletic programs, scheduling programs and events, registering participants, maintaining records and files and preparing reports.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class coordinates and implements athletic programs, to include registering participants, coordinating the draft, creating game schedules, preparing tournament brackets, overseeing tournament play and ensuring that games are played in accordance with applicable rules and procedures. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Athletic Program Supervisor and Athletic Program Coordinator and is evaluated in terms of program effectiveness, observation, periodic discussions and public acceptance/feedback.

Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
  • Responsible for planning, organizing and/or coordinating a comprehensive youth basketball program for all segments of the population.
  • Work includes opening the gym prior to and securing the gym during practice and games; enforcing Parks and Recreation Department policies and procedures, rules and by-laws.
  • Ensures the gym is clean (sweeping, trash pickup, cleaning spills, etc.) following periods of use by the Parks and Recreation Department; condition of the gym after cleanup must meet the standards agreed upon by the school principal and the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Assists coaches during practice and maintains order in the gym during practice and games and ensures the immediate area outside the gym is clean.
  • Reports any acts of vandalism to the school principal and to the Parks and Recreation Department no later than the next working day (exception: any acts of vandalism that would endanger participants and/or spectators, or could cause further damage to school facilities, must be reported immediately).
  • Responsible for Parks and Recreation Department equipment issued to participants, coordinates registration and draft day procedures for all participants.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of the philosophy, principles, practices and techniques of professional athletic and recreational work.
  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and implement comprehensive athletic programs.
  • Ability to supervise employees (gym supervisor, scorekeepers, etc.).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county employees, community agencies and the general public.
Physical Requirements
  • Work requires the exertion of up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  • Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and be at least 18 years of age, and have considerable experience in athletic activities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license upon hire.

Will require some evening and weekend work.
