Job summary

Transylvania County is seeking a Parks and Recreation Assistant to support planning, coordination, and delivery of community recreation programs and events. You will help keep parks and facilities inviting and well-maintained, while engaging with the public and participants.

Join our team as a Parks and Recreation Assistant, where you will play a vital role in enhancing community well-being and enjoyment. In this dynamic position, you will support the planning, coordination, and delivery of recreational programs and events, ensuring our parks and facilities are inviting and well-maintained. Your passion for community engagement and love for the outdoors will help create memorable experiences for all visitors.

  • Responsible for assisting, supervising, and inspecting various recreational programs. This position will work directly on sports programming and summer camps.
  • Assists recreation staff with the evaluation of programs.
  • Assists department and county staff with special events and activities.
  • Responsible for preparing the recreation center for programs and for rental use.
  • Provides departmental information to the public.
  • Patrols facility ensuring the safety of program participants and the proper use of equipment and facility.
  • Responsible for the general maintenance, cleaning and inspection of the recreation center; including gymnasium, activity room, lobby, kitchen, and restrooms.
  • Provides support for the department and staff as needed.
  • Represent the department and county well by offering quality customer service to the public, including internal and external customers, while bringing a positive attitude to work every day.
  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation work.
  • General knowledge of one or more phases of community recreation activities.
  • Knowledge of the rules of a variety of sports.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft suite.
  • Skill in the use of instruments, tools or other equipment used in recreation programs Skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • Ability to work effectively in stressful situations to troubleshoot as needed.
  • Ability to operate computers.
  • Ability to participate in active sports and recreation programs as needed.
  • Ability to provide working leadership to a group of recreation participants.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to direct the work of others.

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference may be given to applicants with proven experience in quality customer service. Must be familiar with recreation programs including but not limited to knowledge of various sports and their basic rules.

Additional Requirements:
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
  • Successful completion of SBI background check with required fingerprinting by Sheriff Office. (Instructions issued by HR at pre-boarding)
  • Successful completion of Transylvania County standard background check. (Instructions issued by HR at pre-boarding)
  • Successful completion of drug screening. (Instructions issued by HR at pre-boarding)
Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work frequently requires standing and walking and occasionally requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; this work does not require any specialized sensory utilization; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
