Job summary

Health & Human Services Comm in Austin, Texas, seeks a Staff Nurse (RN) for the Austin State Hospital. The Nurse I role provides entry to routine nursing care under supervision, conducts patient assessments, administers medications, and contributes to recovery planning in a specialized psychiatric setting.

Essential functions include documenting patient status, maintaining a safe milieu, and collaborating with psychiatrists and the care team.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
• Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in Texas (or another compact state).
• Flexibility for shift work and possible overtime.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive assessments of patients' nursing care needs in an inpatient psychiatric setting.
• Administer medications and maintain MAR and controlled substances records.
• Develop and contribute to individualized recovery plans with the team.
• Provide patient and family teaching and coping strategies.
• Train other staff in psychiatric nursing principles and milieu management.
