Job Description Summary

Providing a safe, secure environment for our workforce and visitors is essential at Nationwide. Our Armed Protective Services Officers patrol and respond to incidents in Nationwide owned buildings and surrounding campuses. Our Protective Services Officers assist associates with Protective Services and safety-related issues. If you are safety focused, an effective communicator, detail oriented and ready to serve and protect our associates and the public, we want to know more about you!

As an Armed Protective Services Officer, you will contribute to the secure and safe environment at Nationwide. You will conduct armed patrols of the facilities and report and/or take action to correct or prevent violations of the company protective services policy. We'll count on you to proactively investigate crimes and unusual, suspicious, or dangerous incidents and resolve these situations. Should the need arise, you'll execute life safety procedures to protect the lives of associates in various emergency situations.

Job Description
Key Responsibilities
  • Responds to emergency situations, e.g., issues of workplace violence, violent offenders, associates stranded in elevators, accidents, fires, medical emergencies, crimes in progress, alarm notifications, etc. Assists with emergency procedures and may direct public safety officials.
  • Patrols buildings and campuses on foot, bike, or car to provide physical protective services and safety protection for associates, customers, the public, and property, providing a very high level of customer contact; Responds immediately to radio calls to investigate alarms and emergency situations. May approach suspicious persons, respond to crimes in progress or be involved in other life threatening or dangerous situations.
  • Writes initial loss/stolen or incident reports for claims of loss or situations within the facilities. Conducts follow-up investigations including reviewing documents, video, talking with suspects and victims, etc. Assists management with investigation of these situations. Testifies in court, prepares reports for court, and preserves evidence as needed.
  • Intervenes in situations that pose imminent risk of harm to associates, customers, the public, or property; this may take the form of investigation, reporting, electronic system intervention, physical altercation, or force, including deadly force, possibly using a firearm and/or taser, if necessary.
  • Enforces company protective services and life safety policies.
  • Provides associate escorts to and from facilities.
  • Assists with on-the-job training of new Protective Service Officer (PSO) associates at all locations. Will provide protective services awareness and new hire protective services training to the associate population.
  • Performs courier service to financial institutions for the Nationwide Companies.

May Perform Other Responsibilities As Assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Supervisor, Armed Protective Services. This is an individual contributor role.

Typical Skills And Experiences

Education: High school degree required. Bachelor or technical school degree is preferred.

Experience: Typically, one - three years of related Protective Services experience, law enforcement or military experience desired.

License/Certification/Designation: Must meet all required training standards and maintain annual firearm licensure and/or taser qualifications required to carry a firearm for a given state: May be required to obtain a concealed carry permit depending upon assignment. Must successfully pass a criminal background check. Must undergo a pre-employment psychological assessment by a health care professional to determine fitness for duty as an armed officer. Must pass a pre-employment physical examination by a health care professional. In addition will be required to successfully pass an annual fitness assessment administered by trained Protective Services staff.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proven knowledge of corporate safety and protective services practices, procedures, and equipment. Must have the ability to learn the use of firearms and safety equipment. Ability to effectively use and maintain a firearm including a handgun and/or taser. Must possess personal computer skills and excellent verbal and written communications skills. Must possess ability to use good judgment, deescalate and provide calm and rational direction. Must be in good physical condition and capable of performing physically demanding tasks in diverse environments. Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds (occasionally up to 80 pounds) to a height of six feet, stand for extended periods (up to 8 hours), ride a bicycle up to 10 miles during a shift, and perform movements such as climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and Human Resource Business Partner.

Job Conditions

Overtime Eligibility: Eligible (Non-Exempt)

Working Conditions: Work is often conducted outdoors in varying weather conditions. The standard workday is eight hours, which includes a paid lunch period. Associate is required to work the specific shift designated at the time of hire: first, second, or third shift. Must be able and/or available to work non-standard hours, including overtime, as needed. Must have a valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record in accordance with Nationwide standards. Must have adequate vision (with or without corrective lenses) to safely use a firearm and perform other essential duties, as well as sufficient hearing to detect conversations, sirens, and radio communications.

Background Check: A criminal check will be done annually for all Protective Services associates. A Motor Vehicle report will be conducted annually.
