Job summary

American Electric Power in Ohio seeks a Protection & Control Manager to supervise installation, operation, and maintenance of relay and protective equipment across transmission and distribution stations. You will lead field activities to meet NERC standards and direct outage responses, with construction management of capital projects.

The role requires a strong background in protection & control, relay settings, and coordination with multiple teams.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related discipline with five years of protection and control experience
• Or an associate’s degree in electrical engineering technology with at least eight years of experience in protection and control activities
• Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
• Lead, facilitate, and coordinate the work activities of others within the group

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate daily Protection & Control personnel activities ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant work
• Oversee review and application of relay and control schemes for reliable operation and protection of equipment
• Manage planning, scheduling, testing, calibration, and maintenance for relays, control systems, RTUs, DAS, DMS, and fault recorders
• Direct installation and commissioning of switchboards, control houses, and temporary protection systems
• Analyze fault events and oscillography data to identify relay issues and actions
• Ensure maintenance of relay settings, test records, calibration data per regulatory requirements
• Support budgeting, workforce planning, and resource allocation for Protection & Control projects
• Provide technical leadership during disturbances and storm restoration
• Coordinate with Engineering and Operations to support system reliability and objectives
• Drive continuous improvement for reliability, efficiency, and compliance
