Job summary

General Motors is seeking an engineer to develop advanced propulsion system architectures and lead a cross-functional team. Responsibilities

  • Balance propulsion system requirements to optimize the vehicle integrated propulsion system.
  • Ensure analytical models, initial component designs and controls have high fidelity.
  • Develop the system to meet performance and cost targets with cross-functional teams.
  • Lead component or system trade studies to meet vehicle requirements of range, performance, drive quality and cost.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Vehicle Architects and BoM owners to develop advanced propulsion technologies and integrate into programs.
  • Identify performance gaps and determine resolution with stakeholders.
  • Ensure propulsion system DFMEA is completed.
  • Align requirements with customer expectations across vehicle, battery, drive unit and motor teams.
  • Engage with vehicle team for alignment on propulsion development and integration.
  • Lead project team through gates and milestones; benchmark with other industries.
  • Protect IP by documenting ideas for invention board and patent submissions.

Job Description

In this role you will be responsible for developing new propulsion system architectures. You’ll lead a cross functional team in the development of Electrified Propulsion System Architectures. We’re seeking an engineer who works collaboratively with others and is comfortable with ambiguity.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
  • Balance propulsion system requirements in order to optimize the vehicle integrated propulsion system

  • Ensure analytical models, initial component designs and controls of key electrification systems and components have been developed with high fidelity

  • Develop the system to meet key performance and cost targets by working collaboratively VDDV, Cost Engineering and Planning

  • Lead component or system trade studies to select optimized solutions to meet vehicle requirements of range, performance, drive quality and cost

  • Collaborate with R&D, Technical Fellows, Vehicle Architects and BoM owners to develop advanced propulsion technologies, proof-of-concepts and provide feedback to technology roadmaps. Integrate selected technologies into ATW or BA programs.

  • Identify performance gaps and work with stakeholders to determine resolution

  • Ensure propulsion system DFMEA is completed

  • Ensure requirements and hardware technology align with customer expectations by collaborating with engineers from vehicle, battery, drive unit, and motor teams.

  • Engage with vehicle team for alignment on propulsion system development and integration

  • Work with other SMT’s, Vehicle teams, planning, Finance, and Electrification leadership as necessary to lead the project team through successful completion of key program gates and milestones

  • Continuously benchmark automotive and other industries to identify and implement innovative technologies for electric vehicles.

  • Protect intellectual property (IP) by documenting your new ideas for invention board review and subsequent patent submissions.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.

  • 5+ years of experience in product engineering.

  • Ability to lead complex technical projects with cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to take ambiguous problems and define a tangible approach to identify optimal solutions.

  • Showcase a wide range of creativity and latitude on challenging assignments.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, project management and negotiating skills.

  • Ability to lead and direct engineers assigned to the program, as well as provide mentorship

  • DFSS Black Belt

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Master’s degree in Engineering or relevant field

  • 8+ years of experience in electrification engineering.
