Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The primary purpose of the University Police Department is to protect the lives and property (real and personal) of all personnel and visitors who frequent the campus. This unit must enforce all applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as, the University rules and regulations. In addition, this unit must patrol and secure the grounds of North Carolina Central University by responding to calls and/or complaints and file reports on all incidents.

Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of this position is to monitor halls and office during working hours; providing customer service; providing information and assistance for visitors and stranded motorists; providing first-aid and transportation for an injured and sick person; testifying in court; traffic and criminal prosecution and testifies at university hearing or student court; patrolling parking lots and university campus or state institutions to detect fires; prowlers, vandals or other unusual conditions; identifies and deters crime, violations or potential hazards during assigned shifts hours.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The successful candidate must possess:

  • Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the general public
  • Ability to act quickly and intelligently in emergency situations
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision
  • To take initiative to see projects and assignments through to completion
  • To learn, interpret and analyze information to make necessary decisions
  • To exercise judgment and discretion in problem-solving
  • Ability to work flexible schedules
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills along with written and oral communication skills

High school diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require a valid NC Driver'S License.

Ensure the compliance of departmental practices and university policies and procedures. He demonstrates advanced knowledge in the usage in force of security equipment and requests resources from Supervisors with current emergency security practices

Duties

Convey oral and written communications and the ability to follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrates the ability to provide assistance and relay information effectively to the University Officials and general public. Demonstrates knowledge to resolve and negotiate conflicts among parties.

Required Competency: Security, Patrol, & Enforcement

Duties

To provide assistance to motorists, direct traffic, and provide support for special events. He demonstrates the ability to react quickly and skillfully in emergency situations. Demonstrates the ability to respond to numerous types of calls for service on a daily basis and provides information and assistance to students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Required Competency: Decision Making

Duties

Interpret and analyze information to make necessary decisions. Be proactive in reporting safety hazards on and around campus.
