Job summary

The Town of Abingdon, Virginia is seeking a Code Enforcement professional to monitor and enforce zoning, land use, nuisance housing, and property maintenance standards. You will inspect sites, investigate complaints, and issue enforcement documents as needed.

A high school diploma or GED is required, along with a minimum of 3 years in related fields. Preferred certifications include DHCD Property Maintenance Official and Stormwater Inspector/Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector, with driving

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 3 years experience in code enforcement, building inspection, law enforcement, environmental science, civil engineering, or related field.
• Certification as a DHCD Property Maintenance Official (preferred) or the ability to obtain certification within a designated timeframe.
• Certification as a Stormwater Inspector and Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector (preferred) or the ability to obtain certification within a designated timeframe.
• Any combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Assists with clerical work including completion of reports and notices, answering telephones, interaction with contractors, property owners, developers, and representatives of other local, state, or federal agencies, both in the field and in the office.
• Enforce the Property Maintenance Code and other applicable Town ordinances.
• Conduct site inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction sites and post-construction sites to verify compliance with erosion and sediment control measures and stormwater management plans.
• Conduct inspections of residential, commercial, industrial, and vacant properties to identify code violations.
• Investigate citizen complaints regarding property maintenance issues, nuisance conditions, and unsafe structures.
• Issue notices of violation, correction orders, citations, and other enforcement documents as necessary.

Education

High school diploma or GED

DHCD Property Maintenance Official certification (preferred)

Stormwater Inspector certification (preferred)

Valid driver's license

• Minimum of 3 years experience in code enforcement, building inspection, law enforcement, environmental science, civil engineering, or related field.
• Certification as a Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) Property Maintenance Official (preferred) or the ability to obtain certification within a designated timeframe.
• Certification as a Stormwater Inspector and Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector (preferred) or the ability to obtain certification within a designated timeframe.
• Any combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Valid driver's license.

Salary: $45000 - $55000 per year
