Job summary

The City of Waukee is seeking a Code Compliance Officer to inspect rental properties and enforce conformance to building, housing and zoning codes. This role requires strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to work with builders, inspectors and the public.

You will prepare reports, develop procedures, interpret legal requirements, and participate in board meetings while maintaining accurate records and upholding city policies. A valid Iowa driver's license is required.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certification or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
• Minimum of 2 years successful experience in general contracting or construction.
• Able to read, analyze, and interpret detailed blue prints, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
• Knowledge of the general provisions of the uniform codes and state, federal and local laws.
• Ability to read and interpret building plans and detect deviations from controlling requirements.
• Must possess a valid Iowa Driver’s License and meet the requirements of the City's motor vehicle policy.

Responsibilities

• Inspect rental properties for violations and enforce conformance to codes.
• Investigate zoning, housing and building code violations.
• Obtain evidence and prepare reports for unresolved violations.
• Maintain inspection records and permits documentation.
• Draft ordinance language and advise on updated codes.
• Attend Board of Adjustments/Appeals meetings as needed.
• Provide staff support to task forces and other teams.
