Job summary

City of Iowa City seeks a Building Inspector I to perform field inspections of commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential structures for compliance with applicable codes. You will provide technical guidance, plan review, and participate in inspections to ensure safety and code conformity.

Under guidance, you’ll support senior staff, perform combination inspections including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing areas, and assist in training other inspectors.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required with one year of related experience or five years of related experience.
• Experience as a building inspector in a governmental jurisdiction is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform field inspections of commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential structures for code compliance.
• Prescribe actions for conformance to codes and standards.
• Provide technical expertise and assist in training Building Inspectors.
• Review plans for complex projects to ensure compliance with building, fire safety, and structural codes.
• Support Senior Building Inspector with scheduling and monitoring inspections.
