Job summary

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a detail-oriented Property Accounting Specialist / Bookkeeper to support the financial operations of our commercial real estate portfolio. This role is responsible for accounts payable and receivable, tenant billings, bank reconciliations, financial recordkeeping, and assisting with monthly reporting. The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, and experienced in real estate, property management, construction accounting and/or bookkeeping functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Record and maintain daily financial transactions for multiple commercial properties.
  • Process accounts payable, including coding invoices, obtaining approvals, and issuing payments.
  • Manage accounts receivable functions, including rent collection, tenant billing, and follow-up on past-due accounts.
  • Prepare and post journal entries and maintain the general ledger.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit card accounts, and balance sheet accounts monthly.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial closings.
  • Maintain tenant security deposit records and escrow accounts.
  • Verify lease-related charges, common area maintenance (CAM) reconciliations, and other tenant recoveries.
  • Generate and distribute owner, property, and management financial reports.
  • Monitor cash flow and assist with budgeting and forecasting activities.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies, lease agreements, and company procedures.
  • Support annual audits and tax preparation by providing requested documentation.
  • Maintain organized accounting and financial records.
  • Assist with special projects and other accounting duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 3 years of bookkeeping or accounting experience.
  • Experience in commercial real estate, property management, or real estate accounting preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with accounting and property management software such as Yardi, MRI, AppFolio, Nexus, or similar systems.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Commercial real estate and/or construction accounting experience.
  • Experience managing multiple properties and entities.
  • Knowledge of CAM reconciliations and lease administration.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer.

This position involves primarily sedentary work, including extended periods of sitting and frequent use of a computer and standard office equipment. The role requires effective written and verbal communication, as well as occasional standing, walking, and the ability to lift and carry light office materials (up to approximately 10-15 pounds), as needed.
