Job Summary

The Rabb‑Venable Excellence in Ophthalmology Research Program, founded in 2000, mentors medical students toward academic careers in ophthalmology. The program provides curated research opportunities, professional development seminars, tiered mentorship, and career advising. Each year, roughly 100 medical students and trainees submit abstracts for the RV Excellence in Ophthalmology Research Symposium, and nearly half complete the Pathway to Success Program, preparing them for residency applications. The Project and Policy Analyst will facilitate the annual Pathway to Success initiative, working with 45–50 applicants per year to optimize their success in the SF Match program. The analyst will conduct analytical studies and projects addressing policy, research, and procedural issues, gather data, evaluate alternatives, and make sound recommendations.

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology is a leading national provider of eye care, training, and research, ranking first in National Eye Institute funding and second in overall NIH funding. With nearly 60 active research grants and over 300 full‑time employees, the department offers state‑of‑the‑art clinical services and a robust research and teaching infrastructure across multiple UCSF campuses.

Key Responsibilities

• Gather and assemble analytical and factual data on assigned issues to prepare reports and analyses summarizing information for internal and external stakeholders, including health and accessibility considerations.
• Prepare, edit, and modify documents such as research reports, manuscripts, presentations, and proposals.
• Collect and prepare information for discussions and meetings, providing logistical oversight and execution of in‑person ophthalmology research symposiums and delegate participation in the National Medical Association meeting.
• Perform analytical studies on policies, research initiatives, programs, and issues, providing logistical support for the RV ophthalmology recruitment and mentoring program and overseeing participant lifecycles, including match support.
• Provide analytical duties in support of functions, research initiatives, programs, and organizational units, with familiarity in AI capabilities to enhance functionality and project promotion.
• Participate in administrative and research policy and program project planning and development, preparing grant and sponsorship submissions for ongoing financial support.
• Provide recommendations and guidelines for programs and initiatives, partnering with other departmental initiatives and programs.
• Coordinate program planning and collaboration with staff, managing virtual meetings from May to August and overseeing the Fireside Chat series with national residency program directors (50+ meetings).

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
• 1+ year of related work experience.
• Working knowledge of common organization‑ or research‑specific computer applications.
• Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality with discretion.
• Sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
• Ability to analyze, research, and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.
• Capacity to multi‑task with demanding timeframes.
