Barnes & Noble is seeking a Project Manager, Store Design, to lead fixture design for new stores, remodels, and relays. You will translate merchant needs into specs, collaborate with planners and 3D renderers, and manage budgets and schedules to ensure timely delivery.
You will work cross-functionally with Purchasing, Merchandising, and Construction teams, traveling to project sites as needed and contributing to postmortems for continuous improvement.
Barnes & Noble is the leading book retailer in the United States, with roots dating back to 1873 and a long history of growth through innovation and expansion. Today, under CEO James Daunt and private ownership by Elliott Advisors, Barnes & Noble operates approximately 700 bookstores nationwide, serves over 700 communities across all 50 states, and maintains a robust digital presence through BN.com, NOOK eBooks and audiobooks, and educational resources such as SparkNotes. The company also includes complementary retail brands such as Paper Source, Books Inc., Tattered Cover, and B. Dalton, further strengthening its market reach. Following a period of revitalization, Barnes & Noble is experiencing strong momentum, with plans to open approximately 60 new stores in 2026, underscoring renewed confidence in physical retail and local bookselling. Combining expansive store networks, curated selections, enhanced in-store experiences, and growing omnichannel capabilities, Barnes & Noble remains the #1 bookseller in the U.S. and a trusted, evolving partner within the publishing and retail ecosystem.
As Project Manager, Store Design, you support the Store Design team in managing key aspects of new store construction, existing store remodels, and store relays — with a primary focus on fixture design and development. This role plays a critical part in advancing both our new and legacy store fleets, creating fixture solutions that translate seamlessly across store formats. You partner closely with the merchandising team to understand space and fixture needs, and with Purchasing and Procurement on value engineering and rollout strategy for fixture programs. As store needs evolve, you develop and refine fixtures in response to space constraints, visual merchandising requirements, and merchant requests. You also help manage a portion of the department's capital expenditure budget, keeping fixture and project costs on or near target by proactively resolving construction and facility issues and driving projects to completion on time and to the required standard. Serving as a key liaison between the internal construction team, facilities team, and general contractors engaged on each project, you bring a passion for process improvement and a strong understanding of how to optimize retail space and floor plans for Barnes & Noble stores. You communicate effectively across cross-functional teams, managing change and resolving conflict with confidence.
