Job summary

Flewelling & Moody in Pasadena is seeking an experienced architect and leader to guide a diverse residential portfolio—multifamily, senior living, affordable housing, mixed-use—and mentor project teams while maintaining strong client relationships.

The role emphasizes design excellence, strict code compliance, and collaboration across disciplines; you will lead projects from design through construction with opportunities to shape the Residential Studio for the long term.

Qualifications

• Licensed Architect in California.
• Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible architectural experience, with significant residential project leadership.
• Experience with HUD-funded housing projects and related federal regulations.
• Strong knowledge of California Building Codes, accessibility and zoning.
• Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining quality and client satisfaction.

What You Will Do:

• Lead multifamily, senior living, affordable housing, mixed-use, and residential projects through all phases of design, permitting, construction administration, and project closeout.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, building long-term relationships through exceptional communication and service.
• Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, staffing, and deliverables to ensure successful project execution.
• Provide leadership and direction to Project Architects, Job Captains, Designers, and Consultants throughout every phase of the project.
• Foster a collaborative, positive, and accountable project team environment.
• Take ownership of project quality by ensuring construction documents are complete, coordinated, technically sound, and aligned with the firm’s standards of excellence.
• Oversee multidisciplinary consultant coordination, including structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, landscape, and specialty consultants.
• Guide technical decision-making while maintaining design intent, constructability, code compliance, and project goals.
• Review project drawings, specifications, consultant deliverables, RFIs, submittals, ASIs, and change orders.
• Participate in agency coordination, permitting, client presentations, consultant meetings, and construction meetings.
• Conduct site observations and construction administration to ensure quality and design intent are maintained throughout construction.
• Mentor and develop junior staff while promoting technical excellence, collaboration, and professional growth.
• Identify opportunities for repeat work, strengthen client relationships, and support business development initiatives.
• Contribute to firm-wide leadership, studio initiatives, recruiting, mentoring, and continuous improvement efforts.

What You Will Bring:

• Licensed Architect in the State of California is a must
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture from an accredited program.
• Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible architectural experience, with significant experience managing residential projects.
• Demonstrated experience with HUD-funded housing projects is required, including a strong understanding of applicable federal regulations, funding requirements, and project coordination.
• Proven ability to independently manage multiple projects while maintaining exceptional quality and client satisfaction.
• Strong knowledge of California Building Codes, accessibility requirements, zoning ordinances, housing regulations, and permitting processes.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary consultant teams and resolving complex technical challenges.
• Strong financial awareness, including project planning, budgeting, staffing, and schedule management.
• Exceptional communication, organization, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor staff, build strong teams, and foster a collaborative studio culture.
• An ownership mindset with the confidence and technical expertise to lead projects independently while maintaining accountability for quality, coordination, and successful project delivery.
