The Crane Project Manager will lead the planning and execution of crane projects supporting a major shipyard operation in the Philadelphia area. This role is responsible for projects from contract award through engineering, procurement, vendor fabrication, transportation, installation, commissioning, customer acceptance, and closeout.
The Project Manager will serve as the primary project leader and customer point of contact, coordinating engineering, procurement, vendors, subcontractors, field personnel, and customers to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contractual, technical, quality, and safety requirements.
The role requires strong technical understanding of crane systems, heavy lifting equipment, material handling systems, and complex industrial equipment, along with the ability to coordinate engineering, fabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
A key responsibility is serving as the primary U.S.-based project interface between customers, U.S. subcontractors and vendors, and Korea-based engineering and execution teams. The Project Manager will translate customer requirements into actionable deliverables, communicate U.S. site requirements to Korea-based teams, and maintain alignment across project stakeholders.
As the business grows, this role will also support the development of U.S. crane maintenance, repair, inspection, modernization, and other MRO service capabilities, including identifying service partners and supporting future customer opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Execution – 30%
- Lead crane projects from contract award through engineering, procurement, fabrication, transportation, installation, commissioning, customer acceptance, and closeout.
- Develop and manage project execution plans, schedules, milestones, resources, and deliverables.
- Monitor progress, identify issues, and implement corrective actions and recovery plans.
- Coordinate engineering, procurement, vendors, subcontractors, field personnel, and customers.
- Lead project meetings and maintain effective communication among internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure project documentation, approvals, and milestones are properly managed.
Project Controls & Commercial Management – 25%
- Develop and manage project budgets, forecasts, schedules, and cost performance.
- Monitor labor, materials, vendor, supplier, and subcontractor costs.
- Identify schedule delays, cost impacts, resource constraints, and project risks.
- Manage scope changes, change orders, claims, and commercial impacts.
- Support contract administration and commercial negotiations.
- Prepare financial, schedule, risk, and project performance reports.
- Coordinate Engineering, Procurement, equipment suppliers, fabrication vendors, logistics providers, installation contractors, and Field Operations.
- Monitor engineering deliverables, equipment procurement, fabrication, quality inspections, transportation, installation, testing, and commissioning.
- Oversee vendor fabrication to ensure compliance with approved engineering specifications, quality standards, project requirements, and schedules.
- Coordinate with Korea-based engineering and execution teams regarding technical requirements, engineering changes, customer requirements, and field conditions.
- Review technical documentation, drawings, specifications, schedules, and project deliverables.
- Support resolution of technical, quality, procurement, fabrication, logistics, and field issues.
- Participate in site visits, inspections, testing, commissioning, and project turnover.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for customers and key project stakeholders.
- Manage communication between customers, U.S. subcontractors/vendors, and Korea-based engineering and execution teams.
- Translate customer requirements into actionable project deliverables.
- Lead customer meetings, project reviews, technical discussions, and status meetings.
- Communicate schedules, milestones, risks, issues, technical concerns, and changes.
- Manage customer expectations and support resolution of escalated issues.
- Build strong working relationships with customers, vendors, suppliers, subcontractors, and internal teams.
MRO & Business Development Support – 10%
- Support development of U.S. crane maintenance, repair, inspection, modernization, and MRO capabilities.
- Identify and develop relationships with qualified U.S. service providers, subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and technical partners.
- Support development of processes and resources needed to establish a sustainable U.S. crane service organization.
- Support future customer opportunities and business initiatives related to crane lifecycle services.
- Participate in business development, customer engagement, and process improvement activities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Business Administration, or related field. Equivalent education and experience may be considered.
- 10+ years of project management experience in construction, industrial equipment, heavy equipment, EPC, infrastructure, or related industries.
- Demonstrated experience managing projects involving cranes, heavy lifting equipment, material handling systems, or complex industrial equipment.
- Strong technical understanding of crane systems, equipment installation, testing, commissioning, and related engineering requirements.
- Experience managing projects from contract award through completion, including engineering, procurement, fabrication, transportation, installation, commissioning, and customer acceptance.
- Experience managing project schedules, budgets, vendors, subcontractors, and customers.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering and field execution teams.
- Experience managing project risks, scope changes, technical requirements, and customer requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, equipment documentation, and project deliverables.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively across U.S.-based and international teams, functions, organizations, and time zones.
Preferred Qualifications
- Shipyard crane experience.
- Port or container crane experience.
- Experience with overhead, gantry, ship-to-shore, or other complex cranes and material handling systems.
- Experience with U.S. crane installation, service, maintenance, inspection, or industrial subcontractors.
- Established U.S. crane subcontractor and vendor network.
- EPC or large-scale industrial project experience.
- Crane installation, commissioning, testing, inspection, maintenance, modernization, or field service experience.
- Experience with change orders, claims, contract administration, and commercial negotiations.
- PMP certification or equivalent.
- Experience working with multinational organizations and international engineering/execution teams.
- Experience working with Korea-based engineering, manufacturing, construction, or industrial organizations.
- Shipyard, port, marine, heavy industrial, material handling, or crane service experience.
Physical & Other Requirements
- Ability to work at a computer for extended periods and use standard office equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and through virtual meeting platforms.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to travel to customer and project sites, including occasional international travel.
- Must possess or be eligible to obtain a valid passport.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
