Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Project Manager to join the Heavy Industry Program to lead the development of a global inventory of chemical plants that will cover key attributes such as plant name, location, owner, and the chemical products produced. This inventory will serve as a starting point for a potential future global chemicals tracker. As the field and number of organizations working in the chemicals sector expands, GEM will gradually expand its collaborations and analytical products to include the chemicals sector.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.

Heavy industry accounts for 22% of global emissions and one-third of global energy use, with steel, cement, and chemicals accounting for 70% of these industrial emissions. In support of building a sustainable energy future, Global Energy Monitor’s Heavy Industry Program currently encompasses several global trackers for iron and steel, cement and concrete, and iron ore mine assets as well as other related projects (such as captive power tracking), partnerships (Net Zero Steel, Asset Impact, Climate Trace coalition, Global Steel Cost Tracker, Global Steel Transformation Tracker, RENEW-Industry, etc.), and data collectives (Steel Data Network).

About Global Energy Monitor

Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.

Location

GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role. Remote staff do not have to be based in the United States; however, preference will be given to those living in the United States. GEM can hire employees worldwide in countries where our PEO (Deel) operates, except in countries classified as Level 3 or 4 on the U.S. Department of State’s website.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Using various global data sources to collect, gather, and vet information to ensure that GEM’s global chemicals inventory will provide the most accurate and timely information on the global chemicals industry. (Sources include government data, company reports, news articles, as well as information from partner organizations, etc.)
  • Using spreadsheets, databases, and other software tools to manage data sets and analyze chemical plants for capacity, production, and technologies.
  • Training and managing the day-to-day work of GEM researchers working on trackers with the Heavy Industry Program, particularly the global chemicals inventory.
  • Creating, formatting, and updating wiki pages for heavy industry projects on the GEM.wiki platform, both manually and by working with GEM’s data team to automate processes where possible.
  • Creating visual presentations of findings using presentation graphics and online tools.
  • Working with data visualization specialists and software developers to develop websites for presenting the global chemicals inventory.
  • Writing briefings and reports summarizing research findings from the global chemicals inventory.
  • Analyzing and staying abreast of industry, NGO, media, and governmental data and reports to assess current and emerging trends.
  • Representing research findings from the global chemicals inventory at meetings, conferences, hearings, and other public events.
  • Networking with third-party researchers in academia, NGOs, governments, and business organizations seeking to use GEM data and analysis.
  • Assessing the environmental and social impacts of heavy industry projects.
  • Collaborating with other GEM staff members across different project areas.
  • Miscellaneous support for other GEM projects as needed.
Required Qualifications

Applicants who tailor their resume and cover letter to these requirements will be prioritized.

  • 3+ years of experience in chemicals manufacturing and/or energy/environmental/heavy industry decarbonization research.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Demonstrated analytical experience in the energy sphere, including experience summarizing and presenting quantitative and qualitative data and managing large data sets.
  • Professional writing skills.
  • Experience coordinating people, projects, and resources; ability to work with others effectively.
  • Experience networking and building working relationships with external stakeholders and experts, including working with media.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with carbon accounting, emissions calculations, decarbonization roadmaps, net zero strategies, etc.
  • Technical background such as engineering, physics, chemistry, environmental science, or demonstrated relevant experience.
  • Experience with relevant database(s).
  • Knowledge of wiki formatting.
  • Fluency in additional languages is a plus.
  • Knowledge of the environmental and social impacts of energy and chemicals/materials production and the global political economy of energy/materials generation and procurement.
  • Understanding of industry and energy transition issues, and/or relevant technical background.
  • Strong research skills, including attention to detail, scrupulous adherence to documented facts, and resourcefulness in using search tools.
  • Demonstrated previous project management experience: ability to break large projects into timelines, monitor progress towards goals, adjust priorities based on feedback, and meet deadlines.
  • Possession of fundamental computer programming and spatial mapping skills.
  • Track record of working to advance social and environmental justice.
Pay and Benefits

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week, work-from-home position. The salary is $105,429.26.
