Project Manager

DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT

Under direction, the class is managerial in nature and accountable for senior manager level functions; positions allocated to this class are characterized as having a broad scope of management responsibilities, and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of comprehensive climate resilience and adaptation plans and strategies, aligning with citywide sustainability goals and targets; manage a portfolio of climate-related projects;
  2. Collaborate with internal departments, sister agencies, community organizations, government agencies, non-profits, and businesses to ensure effective coordination and collaboration in climate planning and implementation;
  3. Develop and manage project budgets, tracking expenditures, and ensuring resources are allocated effectively to achieve project goals;
  4. Develop project timelines, set milestones, and regularly monitor progress to ensure projects are on track for timely completion;
  5. Prepare regular progress reports for internal stakeholders, city officials, and external partners;
  6. Communicate project updates and outcomes through presentations, reports, and public forums; stay informed about local, state, and federal climate policies and regulations;
  7. Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships with community organizations, advocacy groups, non-profits, businesses, academic institutions, and government agencies to enhance the city's climate and environmental justice efforts;
  8. Develop educational materials and outreach campaigns to raise awareness about climate change, environmental justice, and the city's initiatives, tailoring messaging to diverse audiences;
  9. Work collaboratively with advocacy groups and stakeholders to develop and refine policies that promote climate resilience and address environmental disparities, with a focus on advancing equity;
  10. Gather and analyze data related to environmental justice indicators, climate impacts, and community needs, informing strategic decision-making.

Additional duties may be required for this position.

Location: 2 N. LaSalle St., Chicago, IL 60602

Days: Monday-Friday

Hours: 9:00am-5:00pm

THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM THE CAREER SERVICE

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Business or Public Administration or a field of study directly related to the responsibilities of the position, plus five years of project management work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

NOTE:

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in project management, preferably in climate planning, sustainability, or environmental initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of climate change issues, including relevant policies and regulations.
  • Previous training or experience integrating principles of equity and inclusivity into all engagement activities.
  • Familiarity with the City of Chicago's sustainability goals and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience developing climate resilience and adaptation strategies and/or programs.
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience with coalition building, community outreach and engagement, or related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in data collection and analysis related to climate indicators, emissions reductions, energy consumption, and other relevant metrics to assess the impact of projects and initiatives.
  • A minimum of 3 years of managing a portfolio of climate-related projects, such as climate adaptation, nature-based solutions, heat and extreme weather community initiatives, renewable energy projects, or green infrastructure initiatives.

The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the written exercise and/or skills assessment test and the interview will be selected.
