A leading national heavy civil contractor is seeking an experienced Project Manager to join its growing Boston operation. The company combines the resources and technical capabilities of a major international contractor with an established regional presence. Its portfolio includes highways, bridges, rail and mass transit systems, tunnels and water infrastructure.
The Project Manager will oversee heavy civil projects from preconstruction through final closeout, with responsibility for project safety, financial performance, scheduling, quality and client satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning and execution of heavy civil construction projects from preconstruction through completion
- Take full ownership of project performance, including safety, schedule, cost, quality and profitability
- Develop and maintain CPM schedules, short-term look-ahead schedules and recovery plans
- Coordinate field operations, construction sequencing, manpower, equipment and project milestones
- Manage project budgets, forecasting, cost-to-complete reporting, WIP, billing and cash flow
- Identify, price, negotiate and manage change orders and additional work
- Lead subcontractor and vendor procurement, buyout, contract negotiation and performance management
- Review and administer prime contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, drawings and specifications
- Oversee RFIs, submittals, project documentation, correspondence and project controls
- Work closely with owners, construction managers, engineers, consultants, subcontractors and public agencies
- Lead progress meetings and resolve scheduling, design, constructability and field-related challenges
- Ensure compliance with company safety programs, QA/QC procedures and contractual requirements
- Coordinate inspections, testing, punch-list completion, closeout documentation and final turnover
- Provide leadership and mentorship to Project Engineers, Field Engineers and other project team members
Candidate Profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline
- Minimum of 7 years of construction experience, ideally within heavy civil or transportation infrastructure
- Proven experience managing projects involving highways, bridges, rail, transit, utilities, tunnels or other complex civil work
- Strong understanding of project financials, forecasting, cost controls and change-order management
- Experience managing subcontractors, vendors and self-performed construction activities
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, technical specifications and contract documents
- Strong knowledge of CPM scheduling and project controls
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and construction management software
- Experience with Primavera P6, AutoCAD or MicroStation would be beneficial
- OSHA 30 certification preferred, with the ability to complete any additional company-required safety training
- Professional Engineer or CCM certification is advantageous but not essential
- Strong leadership, communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills
The underlying position specifically calls for a heavy civil background, at least seven years of field experience and a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management. Primavera P6 knowledge and PE or CCM credentials are listed as preferred qualifications.
