Job description

Project Manager / Technical Project Engineer
On-Site, 5+ Years Experience, 25–50% Travel
About the Role

An established engineering and manufacturing organization is looking for an experienced Project Manager / Technical Project Engineer to oversee industrial projects from early planning through equipment launch and customer sign-off.

This is a hands-on position combining project leadership with technical coordination and significant customer interaction. You’ll work across engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, vendors, and field teams to keep complex equipment and automation projects moving according to schedule, budget, quality, and customer expectations. The position also includes regular involvement at customer facilities during installation and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take ownership of multiple industrial projects and guide them through the complete delivery lifecycle
  • Build and maintain project timelines, financial plans, key milestones, resource forecasts, and risk strategies
  • Act as the main point of communication for customers throughout active projects
  • Bring together engineering, manufacturing, operations, suppliers, and other stakeholders to maintain project alignment
  • Lead customer meetings, technical reviews, project updates, and equipment inspections
  • Coordinate deliverables across mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, service, and quality functions
  • Review technical drawings, equipment layouts, specifications, and other engineering documentation
  • Identify potential schedule, cost, resource, and technical challenges and drive appropriate solutions
  • Oversee design revisions and assess how proposed changes may affect cost, timing, and overall project scope
  • Handle commercial changes and ensure necessary customer and internal approvals are secured
  • Coordinate purchasing requirements, vendor commitments, manufacturing schedules, and equipment delivery
  • Use ERP/MRP and project management systems to maintain visibility into materials, purchasing, inventory, labor, and production progress
  • Track project spending, forecasts, supplier costs, and overall financial performance
  • Coordinate equipment installation, testing, startup, commissioning, and final acceptance
  • Provide onsite leadership for installation teams, contractors, suppliers, and other project participants
  • Manage field activities including equipment inspections, open-item resolution, startup coordination, and final project closeout
  • Travel to customer locations during important installation, troubleshooting, commissioning, and launch periods
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Project Management, or another relevant technical discipline
  • 5+ years of project management experience within an industrial, manufacturing, automation, tooling, equipment, or engineering environment
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technically complex engineering or equipment projects
  • Experience overseeing projects valued above $250,000 is preferred
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing operations, engineering processes, and the delivery of industrial equipment
  • Experience controlling project costs, timelines, resources, risks, design changes, and customer-driven scope adjustments
  • Comfortable interpreting engineering drawings, equipment layouts, technical specifications, and manufacturing documentation
  • Experience working with ERP/MRP platforms and project scheduling software
  • Strong communication and customer relationship management skills
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and coordinate multiple internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25–50%, with some projects requiring multi-day or multi-week stays at customer locations
Experience with the following is beneficial:
  • PMP certification or formal project management training
  • Automotive or industrial manufacturing
  • Tooling and engineered equipment
  • Machine builds and production equipment installations
  • Equipment startup and commissioning
  • Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies
  • SAP or similar ERP platforms
  • Contract administration
  • Supplier and vendor management
Why Consider This Opportunity?
  • Lead projects from initial planning through equipment installation and successful customer handover
  • Work on technically varied projects involving automation, tooling, manufacturing systems, and industrial equipment
  • Maintain meaningful involvement in both the technical and commercial sides of project delivery
  • Work closely with customers rather than operating solely as an internal project coordinator
  • Gain hands-on exposure to equipment installation, startup, troubleshooting, and commissioning
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain professionals
  • Take responsibility for important project decisions involving cost, timing, resources, suppliers, and technical execution
  • Support industrial and automotive manufacturing projects across North America
  • Join a hands-on engineering environment offering opportunities to take on increasingly complex projects and leadership responsibility

This opportunity is particularly well suited to a technical Project Manager who enjoys owning complex industrial projects while remaining closely connected to the engineering, manufacturing, and field execution involved in bringing equipment into production.
