Opus Group is seeking multiple Project Interns for the Summer of 2027 across Des Moines, IA, Minneapolis, MN, Chicago, IL, Indianapolis, IN, Kansas City, MO, Phoenix, AZ and Denver, CO offices.

The interns will assist the Project Management team, support safety and cost-control efforts, and gain hands-on experience in construction management. Current students pursuing Civil/Construction-related degrees are preferred.

Description

We are seeking multiple Project Interns for the Summer of 2027 for our Des Moines, IA, Minneapolis, MN, Chicago, IL, Indianapolis, IN, Kansas City, MO, Phoenix, AZ and Denver, CO offices.

The hourly wage for this position is $25 - $27 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. We are committed to providing fair and competitive pay practices and ensuring compliance with all applicable pay transparency regulations.

The Project Intern is a temporary construction professional responsible for assisting the Project Management team in the performance of their duties. Primary responsibilities include the maintenance of all project correspondence and documentation; economic and timely project completion; and development of interpersonal and technical skills necessary for successful project management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety First
  • Work with the safety department to have working knowledge of the federal OSHA standards that apply to the project(s)
  • Perform jobsite hazard analysis and ongoing safety walks with project supervisor.
  • Support the project management team in providing the labor, materials, equipment and other resources necessary to perform each project safely.
Construction Management
  • Assist with proposal work to include quantity takeoffs, estimating support and proposal assemblage.
  • Assist with the subcontractor bid process, including bid list development, bid package assemblage, distribution and tracking, bid breakdowns, bid review meeting documentation and general coordination.
  • Assist with and/or manage the construction and “activation” of assigned projects, ensuring project meets budget, schedule, quality, and customer satisfaction criteria.
  • Review and manage RFI’s and submittal process, design drawings, budgets, schedules, and other project-related matters with the project manager and job site superintendent.
  • Share job cost responsibility through monitoring budgets and schedules, resolving problems, and reporting cost projections to supervisor on a monthly or more frequent basis.
  • Assist with the negotiation and writing of subcontracts and change orders for appropriate Opus associate(s) and/or subcontractors’ signatures.
  • Manage sustainable/green building project certifications and required documentation when applicable.
Project Management Skill Development
  • Strengthen interpersonal skills through development of productive relationships with team and company personnel
  • Strive to optimize team effectiveness and help coordinate project team.
  • Initiate meetings to keep supervisor informed of project status and progress.
  • Acquire understanding of building code and design.
  • Complete non-project assignments related to background, capabilities and interest.
Requirements
Qualifications:
  • Current enrollment in pursuit of Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Ability to work productively with others, solve problems independently, communicate effectively and lead projects.
  • Ability to demonstrate ongoing progress toward acquiring skills, knowledge and abilities of a Project Engineer II.
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and must not require sponsorship for employment visa status now or in the future (e.g. H1-B).
