Project Engineer - Substation (Physical)

Location: MO or IL | Employment Type: Full-time

Department: Substation Design | Reports To: Substation Department Manager

Position Summary

We are seeking a professionally licensed engineer to serve as a technical leader and Engineer of Record for complex substation design projects. This role combines hands‑on engineering expertise with people leadership, technical authority, and project oversight. You will lead the technical execution of physical substation projects from concept through construction support, ensure compliance with applicable codes and client standards, and mentor a team of engineers and designers. You will work closely with Project Managers and clients to deliver high‑quality, compliant, and efficient engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the responsible engineer of record for substation projects on physical design.
  • Review project documentation prior to client submittals.
  • Act as the technical manager for projects, coordinating across disciplines and managing the execution of projects.
  • Mentor engineers and designers by reviewing work and providing technical guidance.
  • Provide construction support by addressing RFIs, change orders, and field conditions.
  • Manage design execution with budgets, schedules, estimates, and progress tracking.
  • Review proposals and participate in execution planning.
  • Own your team’s impact on the overall success of the project.
  • Manage low‑risk projects independently and medium‑ to high‑risk projects under supervision.
People Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead and mentor a design team; provide coaching, feedback, and career development.
  • Facilitate team meetings, design reviews, and milestone check‑ins to maintain alignment, accountability, and performance transparency.
  • Foster a collaborative, high‑performance culture focused on technical excellence, delivery reliability, and continuous improvement.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a related ABET‑accredited engineering discipline.
  • Typically, 7 or more years of substation design experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical design packages and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Advanced knowledge of substation electrical and physical design principles.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Excel; familiarity with WinIGS, Visual, or similar tools.
  • Proven ability to mentor or lead teams, manage technical scope, budgets, and schedules for multiple projects.
  • High level of independence, accountability, and technical judgment.
  • Excellent communication and client‑facing skills; ability to influence cross‑functional teams.
