We are seeking an experienced Substation Engineer – Physical Design to join a growing Power Delivery team. This position will be responsible for the engineering and physical design of electrical substations across utility and power delivery projects.
The ideal candidate will have 6+ years of substation engineering experience, strong knowledge of physical design standards and practices, and the ability to take ownership of projects from initial design through construction.
A Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred, but strong substation physical design experience will be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and oversee physical substation designs for utility and power delivery projects, including new substations, expansions, upgrades, and modifications.
- Prepare and review substation physical design drawings, including:
- General arrangements and site plans
- Section and elevation drawings
- Steel and structure layouts
- Conduit and cable routing
- Lighting and shielding systems
- Bill of materials and equipment specifications
- Perform engineering calculations and develop design criteria in accordance with applicable utility standards and industry practices.
- Coordinate physical design requirements with Protection & Controls, Civil/Structural, Transmission, Distribution, and other engineering disciplines.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and construction packages for technical accuracy and compliance.
- Support project teams throughout the design, construction, and commissioning phases.
- Participate in client meetings and provide technical guidance to clients, project managers, and junior engineers.
- Provide technical mentorship and guidance to less-experienced engineers and designers.
- Assist with project scope development, schedules, estimates, and resource planning.
- Perform site visits and field investigations as needed.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable NESC, IEEE, ANSI, OSHA, utility standards, and project-specific requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 6+ years of professional engineering experience within the electric utility, power delivery, or substation industry.
- Demonstrated experience with substation physical design and engineering.
- Experience designing substations typically ranging from 69kV through 345kV+.
- Strong understanding of substation equipment, bus configurations, clearances, grounding, shielding, structures, and electrical safety requirements.
- Experience developing and reviewing engineering drawings and construction packages.
- Ability to coordinate effectively across multiple engineering disciplines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- Experience with 500kV substations or other high-voltage transmission projects.
- Experience working directly with electric utilities, EPC firms, or engineering consulting firms.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
- Experience with ETAP, AutoCAD Electrical, PLS-CADD, CYMCAP, or other engineering/design software is a plus.
- Experience with utility-specific substation design standards and specifications.
- Previous experience leading projects or mentoring junior engineers.
- Experience supporting substation construction, commissioning, or field engineering activities.
