Job summary

Helmerich & Payne, Inc. seeks a Senior Engineer to lead mechanical and structural design on drilling rigs. You will mentor engineers, collaborate with fabrication facilities, and develop hydraulic systems and modifications for in-field builds.

Ideal candidates bring 5+ years of rig design experience, a PE credential or progress toward licensure, and strong project management and communication skills for cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from ABET accredited university.
  • 5+ years of mechanical/structural/civil design experience with hand calculations and CAD.
  • Experience with drilling rig design is beneficial.
  • Licensed PE or active toward licensure.
  • Familiar with AISC design practices.
  • Familiar with API specifications and practices is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of structural steel fabrication, welding and fabrication drawings.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems.
  • Strong project leadership and self-starter attitude.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and CAD software.
  • Team player with a service attitude.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Able to work with office, shop, and oil-field personnel.
  • Occasional international and in-country travel; rig site visits.
  • Strong mechanical inclination with machine design and PM background.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mechanical solutions for rig components.

  • Develop relationships with fabrication facilities.
  • Prepare Certificates of Compliance for designs.
  • Prepare proposals, budgets and schedules with International Marketing.
  • Formalize technical design reports.
  • Write standardized technical letters for customer feedback.
  • Support operations on structural repairs and field upgrades.
  • Mentor junior engineers and advise cross-functionally.

At a Glance

As a member of the FlexRig Engineering team, you will work on drilling rig design projects, site layouts, and advise on structural and mechanical repairs. You'll be expected to work closely with regional and operational managers to ensure H&P’s engineering needs are met for all international operations. Work seamlessly with other engineers, drafting and field inspectors to accomplish the task at hand. Create and supply drawings, advisory and answer any engineering related requests from the district and field personnel. This position also encompasses working large-scale project management in concert with our assembly and fabrication facilities. As a Senior Engineer, you'll be expected to mentor within our other engineering groups.

What you will do
  • Provide mechanical solutions for various projects on all rig components.
  • Value engineer existing build programs as well as in-field upgrades.
  • construction projects with local fabricators and H&P Houston assembly facility.
  • Design new mechanical equipment, hydraulic arrangements and analyze current builds for modification projects.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with H&P’s primary fabrication facilities.
  • Create and distribute necessary “Certificate of Compliance” documents for various H&P designs.
  • Work with International Marketing groups in preparing proposals, budget estimates and schedules.
  • Formalize technical reports from design analysis.
  • Author standardized technical letters specific to rig functions and equipment design for customer feedback.
  • Provide technical support for operations on structural repairs, in field upgrades as well as CAT III & IV inspections.
  • Mentor junior engineers and be available to advise cross functionally throughout the company.
What you need
  • Minimum Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
  • Minimum of 5 years of mechanical/structural/Civil design experience, strong ability to perform and organize hand calculations and computer aided design analysis.
  • Experience with drilling rig design is beneficial.
  • Is a licensed PE or is working towards attaining it
  • Familiar with AISC design practices
  • Familiarity with API specification and recommended practices is beneficial
  • Knowledgeable on general structural steel fabrication practices, welding and improving fabrication drawings
  • Knowledgeable with hydraulic systems
  • Strong ability to lead projects and be a self-starter.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and CAD software is beneficial.
  • Team player with a service attitude
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work and communicate with office, shop, and oil field personnel
  • Occasional international and in-country travel required to fabrication facilities, assembly facilities, and rig locations
  • Occasional Rig site visits and overnight stays on location.
  • Not a must, but a plus
  • The preferred candidate will have a strong mechanical inclination with a background in machine design and project management.
