Job summary

Alaska Aggregate Products LLC is seeking a Construction Designer/Engineer to help plan, design, assess, and oversee construction and maintenance functions on projects under the direction of Senior Projects Manager or engineering staff. The role involves reading blueprints, drafting drawings, assisting in site inspections, surveying, estimating quantities, and preparing reports.

A high school diploma plus several years of field experience are required; a CM/Engineering degree and MSHA

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; four or more years of construction-related field experience.
  • Must possess a valid state driver license.
  • Preferred: Degree in CM or Engineering; MSHA certification.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and design systems and structures and draft drawings using design software.
  • Read project blueprints and specifications to determine dimensions and material quantities.
  • Assist in project site inspections to monitor progress and safety compliance.
  • Support Senior Project Manager in construction, operations, and maintenance activities at project sites.
  • Participate in surveying to lay out installations and establish reference points.
  • Estimate quantities and costs of materials, equipment, or labor.
  • Prepare reports, bid proposals, deeds, environmental impact statements, and related descriptions.
  • Provide technical assistance regarding design and construction to management and workers.
  • Inspect project site and evaluate contractor work for conformance to design specs and codes.

Summary

Responsible to help plan, design, assess and oversee construction and maintenance functions on projects, under the direction of the Senior Projects Manager or designated engineering staff.

Essential Functions
  • Help plan and design systems and structures and draft detailed dimensional drawings and design layouts for projects and to ensure conformance to specifications, using design software and drawing tools.
  • Read and review project blueprints and structural specifications to determine dimensions of structure and material requirements
  • Calculate dimensions, square footage, profile and component specifications, and material quantities, using calculator or computer.
  • Assist in project site inspections to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications and safety and sanitation standards.
  • Assist the Senior Project Manager in construction, operations, and maintenance activities at project sites, including transporting of supplies and materials needed to conduct work.
  • Participate in surveying to lay out installations and establish reference points, grades, and elevations to guide construction.
  • Estimate quantities and cost of materials, equipment, or labor to determine project feasibility.
  • Help prepare or present reports, bid proposals, deeds, environmental impact statements, and property and right-of-way descriptions.
  • Provide technical assistance regarding design, construction, or project modifications and structural repairs to management and workers, as appropriate.
  • Analyze proposed site factors and design maps, graphs, tracings, and diagrams to illustrate findings.
  • Test soils and materials to determine the adequacy, strength, and necessary quantity.
  • Document project activities and data, as required.
  • Confer with supervisor to determine project details.
  • Inspect project site and evaluate contractor work to detect design malfunctions and ensure conformance to design specifications and applicable codes.
  • Plan and conduct field surveys to locate new sites and analyze details of project sites.
Other Tasks
  • Monitor and help ensure safety standards on current projects.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Four or more year’s construction-related field experience
  • Must possess a valid state driver license

Preferred:

  • Degree in CM or Engineering
  • MSHA certification
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of engineering and technology principles and the ability apply techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of goods and services in heavy civil construction and remote field work.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use a computer and software to record, track and design and analyze data.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved the heavy remote construction projects, such as structures and ice roads.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Ability to professionally represent the company to suppliers, venders, customers, regulatory agencies and the public.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in writing.
  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate verbally with others.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
  • Ability to meet design schedules with dependability and consistency.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise good judgment in prioritizing and carrying out duties.
  • Ability to wear protective clothing, as needed on project sites.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to apply basic first aid in emergency situations.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle to transport work related equipment, supplies and materials.
Physical Demands

The following activities are rated for frequency of occurrence: Not Present = NP; 1-10% of the work day = Rare; 11-33% = Frequent; 34-66% = Occasional; 67-100% = Constant. Typical activities include sitting, frequent or occasional reaching, standing, walking, bending, crouching, fingering, kneeling, talking, climbing, hearing, balancing, twisting, and operating foot controls. Lifting and carrying 50-100 lbs, pushing/pulling 50-100 lbs may be required in some situations.

Working Conditions
  • Environmental conditions: exposure to inclement weather; extreme cold or heat; wet/humid conditions; noise; vibration; dust/fumes; diesel exhaust; and other hazards typical of remote heavy civil construction.
  • Hazards: moving mechanical parts, electric shock, high places, diesel exposure, petroleum distillates, and other risks associated with equipment operation.
