Job summary

John Burns is seeking a Project Engineer to support Project Managers on job sites, acting as their field presence. You will assist with material inventories, ordering, and documenting progress, while maintaining strong communication with the on-site team.

Responsibilities include studying plans, coordinating with subcontractors, and ensuring proper documentation and labor tracking per JBCC policies. OSHA 30 certification should be obtained within 12 months.

  • Record work progress, quantities and redline drawings as needed.
  • Prepare material lists and order materials and subcontractors.
  • Maintain document control and organize project documents.
  • Track labor units and adhere to JBCC policy.
  • Communicate clearly in writing and verbally with teams.
  • Navigate the heavy job (HSCC 11) materials and costs.
  • Follow JBCC employee handbook and RTDB policies.
  • Foster solid relationships with field personnel.

Job description

The Project Engineer position is a Project Management Support position whose primary role is serving as the field-presence eyes & ears of a Project Manager on job sites. The Project Engineer interacts daily with the Project Manager and on-site Foreman building the job, proving support with inventorying materials, making lists of materials needed, ordering materials and subcontractors for the coming days, photographing work progress and documenting work completed (quantities, redline drawings, etc.).

We're looking for you to do the following:
  • Plans - Study the plans in detail for each assigned project. Ability to clearly understand the plans, notes, addendums, Q&A, clarifications. Demonstrate how all these documents link together on each project.
  • Specifications - Study the specifications for each pay item/scope of work on each assigned project. Specification review is critical to understand the critical details of the project including scope, safety/quality/payment requirements, closeout, incidental material requirements.
  • Contract Documents - Understand the order of precedence for all contract documents.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Document Control - Learn and be able to demonstrate how specific project documents are accessed, managed, created, logged and organized.
  • Labor Tracking - Demonstrate understanding of labor units and accurately complete labor tracking per JBCC policy on all assigned projects.
  • Organizational Skills - Demonstrate strong organizational skills.
  • Basics of Estimating - Understand the basics of estimating at JBCC. Including quantity take-offs, material pricing, labor units, labor rates, subcontractor costs, equipment, general conditions, projected contract value and projected margin.
  • HSCC 11 Heavy Job - Develop clear understanding of how to navigate Heavy job. Must understand quantity input, cost coding and time card management.
  • Demonstrate ability to follow through on assigned tasks without requiring reminders.
  • Understand JBCC employee handbook.
  • Consistently display honesty, integrity, perseverance, curiosity, adaptability and positive energy.
  • Material Handling - Coordinate material handling and site delivery with JBCC yard management.
  • Material - Handling of all short-term supplier and subcontractor needs (Day to Day / Weekly material needs).
  • Safety - OSHA 30 - Obtain OSHA 30 certification within twelve (12) months of start date.
  • Safety - Clear understanding JBCC locate policy and PMs responsibilities to ensure we follow RTDB policy.
  • Social Capital - JBCC Field Personnel - Develop rapport with all JBCC field personnel working on your assigned projects.
You Have:
  • Experience -Minimum 1 year experience in administrative role.
  • Communication - Ability to relate to a diverse group of individuals throughout the organization. Build social capital and trust with customers, and internal teams.
  • Computer Skills - Basic PowerPoint, Excel, and Word proficiency.
