Job summary

Vertical Mechanical Group in Reston, VA is seeking a Project Engineer to support commercial mechanical construction projects from preconstruction through completion. You will work with Project Managers, Superintendents, and field teams to gain hands-on experience and grow technically and professionally.

The role emphasizes coordinating HVAC and plumbing installations, reading drawings, and maintaining schedules within budget. Travel about 30–40% across DMV area is expected.

Qualifications

• 0–2 years of experience in commercial construction coordination or PM roles.
• Foundational knowledge of HVAC and plumbing systems and installation processes.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and specs.
• Proficiency with project management software and MS Office.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Support project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and execution.
• Assist in coordinating HVAC and plumbing installations to stay on schedule and within budget.
• Review mechanical drawings, specs, and construction docs.
• Monitor progress and communicate updates to PMs, field teams, and clients.
• Assist with RFIs, submittals, changes, procurement, and documentation.
• Collaborate with field personnel to resolve challenges and boost productivity.
• Coordinate with subs, vendors, and internal teams for project delivery.
• Assist with safety compliance, quality requirements, and closeout activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Support project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and overall project execution.
• Assist in coordinating HVAC and plumbing installations to ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget.
• Review and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and commercial construction documents.
• Monitor project progress and communicate updates to project managers, field teams, and clients.
• Assist with RFIs, submittals, change orders, procurement, and project documentation.
• Collaborate with field personnel to resolve project challenges and maintain productivity.
• Coordinate with subcontractors, vendors, and internal departments to ensure successful project delivery.
• Help ensure compliance with company safety standards, quality requirements, and project specifications.
• Support project closeout activities, including punch lists, documentation, and turnover packages.

Requirements

• 0–2 years of experience in commercial construction project coordination or project management (mechanical construction experience preferred).
• Foundational knowledge of HVAC and plumbing systems and installation processes.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
• Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
• Familiarity with project management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
• Eagerness to learn, take initiative, and grow within the mechanical construction industry.
• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred.

Location

This position is based at our headquarters in Reston, VA and requires travel to project sites throughout the DMV area (approximately 30–40% travel).
