Job summary

JT THORPE is seeking a Project Engineer focused on estimating and cost controls for industrial construction projects in Phoenix, AZ or Salt Lake City, UT. The role partners with PMs, superintendents, customers, and vendors to ensure safe, on-schedule, on-budget delivery per JT THORPE standards.

Responsibilities include budgeting, cost analysis, scheduling, procurement support, and preparing reports for leadership. Strong Excel and AutoCAD skills preferred; willing to travel up to 25%.

Position: Project Engineer - Estimating and Cost Controls Focus

Location: Phoenix AZ or Salt Lake City, Utah

Position Overview:

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Manager, the Project Engineer supports the planning, execution, financial performance, and successful completion of industrial construction projects. Depending on project complexity, the Project Engineer may serve as the primary company representative responsible for coordinating project execution, managing project controls, and supporting overall project profitability.

This role places a strong emphasis on project controls, including estimating, cost management, forecasting, scheduling, reporting, procurement, and quality assurance. The Project Engineer partners with Project Managers, Superintendents, customers, vendors, and field personnel to ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with JT THORPE quality standards.

While this position emphasizes estimating and project controls, the Project Engineer remains an integral member of the project management team and may support field execution throughout the project lifecycle.

Scopes of work managed and/or estimated by the Project Engineer may include:

  • Scaffolding
  • Insulation
  • Coatings
  • Painting

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop, monitor, and maintain project budgets, forecasts, and financial performance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Analyze labor, equipment, material, subcontractor, and production costs to identify risks and opportunities that improve project profitability.
  • Project estimating, quantity take-offs, bid preparation, supplier pricing, and change order development.
  • Prepare and maintain project schedules and communicate schedule impacts.
  • Prepare project reports, cost analyses, financial forecasts, productivity metrics, and executive summaries for project leadership.
  • Coordinate procurement of materials and equipment.
  • Build strong working relationships with customers, vendors, subcontractors, and field supervision.
  • Support business development by assisting with estimates, proposals, and client relationships.
  • Coordinate project execution from award through project closeout.

Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of construction project management experience, including but not limited to developing project plans, coordinating projects, managing project team activities, and communicating changes and progress.
  • A good understanding of how to read industrial drawings and using drawings to develop bills of material.
  • Ability to self-structure. Independence is key to this job, and therefore organization, strong time management and multi-tasking are required.
  • Hard working, conscientious, self-starters who are looking to build a long –term career with our company.
  • Strong computer background, including proficiency with MS Office.
  • Extensive knowledge of Excel (including complex functions, linking spreadsheets, etc.) required.
  • Must have a strong work ethic allowing long hours at industrial construction sites.
  • Ability to travel as needed, up to 25%.
  • Strong sense of integrity, assertiveness, and urgency.
  • High abstract reasoning and idea orientation skills.
  • High self-confidence. Customers and project managers need to trust what you are saying.
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Scaffolding, Insulation, Coatings, and/or Painting preferred.
  • AutoCAD skills and experience are preferred but not required.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in business, construction management, engineering or accounting preferred. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education.
