Job summary

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is seeking a Project Engineer to support the Major Capital Projects program, delivering components of the Midtown Bus Terminal Replacement and related MCP initiatives. You will assist in managing design contracts, monitor design consultants, and coordinate with operations to align design with project requirements.

Responsibilities

• Support the Senior Program Manager in the delivery of assigned project components for the Midtown Bus Terminal Replacement (MBTR) and ancillary MCP projects.
• Assist in managing design contracts to ensure work is delivered within established scope, schedule, and budget.
• Monitor and coordinate the work of design consultants, particularly mechanical and electrical systems supporting the MBTR projects, including specialized Mechanical and Electrical reports from subconsultants.
• Administer contracts, including review of invoices, tracking progress, and supporting change order processing.
• Coordinate with facility operations and stakeholders to support design development related to MBTR project.
• Facilitate coordination between design team and construction management regarding mechanical and electrical system submission and commissioning.
• Review and track consultant and contractor submittals, ensuring alignment with project requirements and design intent.
• Support field oversight by monitoring construction activities, identifying issues, and escalating concerns as needed.
• Assist in maintaining project documentation, including technical records, reports, and quality assurance/acceptance materials.
• Communicate project status, risks, and issues to project leadership and support coordination across project teams.

About the Role

Major Capital Projects (MCP) has overall responsibility for the design and construction delivery of the new Midtown Bus Terminal and the construction management of the core and shell of the new Hudson Tunnels for the Gateway Development Commission.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Program Manager, the Project Engineer will:

• Support the Senior Program Manager in the delivery of assigned project components for the Midtown Bus Terminal Replacement (MBTR) and ancillary MCP projects.
• Assist in managing design contracts to ensure work is delivered within established scope, schedule, and budget.

Minimum Qualification(s)

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, or a related technical discipline from an accredited college or university.
• A minimum of two years of experience in capital projects, preferably including design management or field construction experience.

Desired Qualifications

• Relevant experience supporting design and/or construction of mechanical and/or electrical projects, including coordination of scope, schedule, and project documentation.
• Working knowledge of project management principles, processes, and project delivery methods.
• Ability to review technical documents, drawings, specifications and support coordination across multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities and support project delivery in a fast-paced environment.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of reports and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Proficiency in standard business software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey anticipates that the actual salary offered to a successful candidate will depend on aspects such as experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal factors. The expected compensation range for this role is:

Minimum: $90,012 Midpoint: $117,018 Maximum: $144,014

In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits employees to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business, and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required on business needs.
