Job summary

The Babcock & Wilcox Company is seeking a Project Engineer III to provide technical leadership and coordinate multi-discipline teams on data-center boiler projects, including procurement, fabrication, erection and commissioning.

You will act as the technical liaison with customers and partners, drive cost-reduction initiatives, monitor schedule and costs, and mentor junior engineers while maintaining safety and quality.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or proven equivalent technical experience.
  • 12-15 years' experience in a relevant power generation field preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and boiler concepts.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to coordinate multiple engineering activities.
  • Ability to influence and build trust at all levels, from craft labor to senior leadership.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization, ensuring competing activities are prioritized.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a technical extension of the Project Manager coordinating development and exchange of information between customer, A/E, vendors, and B&W.
  • Lead discussions with A/E, customers, and vendors for routine and first-of-a-kind applications.
  • Interpret contract obligations including scope, cost, and schedule and allocate scope among Project Engineers.
  • Provide technical leadership during customer meetings and evaluate potential first-time vendors.
  • Serve as the technical interface at site during construction and commissioning and manage submittals and cost allocations.
  • Monitor engineering man-hour expenditures and coordinate with shop/field personnel to resolve problems during manufacture, construction and start-up.
  • Support quality assurance, vendor claim resolution, and engineering change control throughout all project phases.

The data center boiler Project Engineer III is directly responsible for the technical excellence and the technical coordination of assigned projects and indirectly responsible for project profitability, with these responsibilities crossing multiple engineering disciplines. This individual will guide the engineering process in addition to monitoring all phases of work beyond engineering such as procurement, manufacturing, erection and commissioning. As the project technical liaison, they will be intimately involved with communications between both internal and external customers, and will strive to reduce costs in all project phases to insure profitability while maintaining schedule commitments. This person is able to technically lead very large projects (> $500M) including full scope projects with consortium partners, construction, extended scope, etc. where B&W has primary control.

  • Act as a technical extension of the Project Manager coordinating the development and the exchange of information, as well as technical correspondence between the customer, Architect/Engineer (A/E),vendors,B&W (external and internal)and various other organizations working on the project.
  • Lead discussions such as those opposite an A/E or customer, and with vendors providing equipment on routine and/ unique/first of a kindapplication.
  • Use theirunderstandingofthecontract obligations for the assignment including scope, cost, schedule,and alsoknow scope split responsibilities of otherProject Engineerson the project.
  • Participate with the Project Manager as the technical lead during customer project meetings, provide evaluations of potentialfirst timevendors, and participatein projects where joint venture and licensee interfacing is required.
  • Serve as the technical interface between B&W, customers, vendors, sublet engineers,fabricatorsand the erector, and represent B&W technically at site during construction and commissioning.Activities include the development of specifications and document submittal requirements, resolution of questions,monitoringof schedule commitments and cost allocations, directing Purchasing on the procurement of these commodities, and monitoring invoicing (asrequired).
  • Monitor engineeringman-hourexpenditures, manage technical guarantee risk throughout the project, and work closely with shop and field personnel to resolve problems during manufacture, construction and start up phases of the project.
  • Coordinate the resolution of engineering errors. Participate in Quality Assurance (QA) inspections(asrequired),support the resolution ofvendor claims,andwork with the Erector to solve field fit-up problems and disposition of Site Problem Reports.
  • Actively work with Project Controls to ensure compliance throughout all project phases byidentifyingproject changes, evaluating potential cost variances, anddeterminingschedule impact before the changes are implemented.
  • Manage engineering change control with minimum supervision tomaintainengineering schedule andmanhourestimates.
  • Take an active role in supporting department/company process improvement activities, and mentor less experiencedProject Engineers.
  • Review proposal specifications for potential projects, detect areas where potential clarifications and exceptions need to beidentified, andnegotiateterms opposite the customer. Work with customers and potential partners when project alliances are formed to ensure division of work is well defined and that B&W is well positioned to complete its potential scope of work.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or proven equivalent technical experience
  • 12-15 years' experience in a relevant power generation field preferred.
  • A Professional Engineer's (PE) license is desirable.
  • Must have relevant engineering background and sufficient demonstrated knowledge of heat transfer principles, fluid mechanics, and boiler concepts
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to coordinate multiple engineering activities simultaneously.
  • Ability to influence and build trust at all levels, from craft labor to senior leadership.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization, ensuring that competing activities are prioritized accordingly.
