Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or related duties; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of related experience.
  • Equivalent combinations allowed with one year of additional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate purchasing, volunteer projects, public programs and community initiatives.
  • Plan and oversee 30+ annual volunteer events with 100-200+ participants; manage logistics.
  • Manage volunteer registration, waivers, participation records, service hours and outcomes.
  • Develop partnerships with corporations, nonprofits, schools, civic groups and community organizations.
  • Lead volunteer projects: shoreline cleanups, invasive species removal, trail maintenance and beautification.
  • Conduct community outreach and promote volunteer opportunities, meetings and events.
  • Track and report program metrics, volunteer participation, and community impact.
  • Liaise with Purchasing, Accounting and vendors; coordinate purchase orders and budget reports.
  • Create yearly budget with Administrator and manage within budget guidelines.
  • Collaborate with Park Administrator and Special Events to plan, implement and evaluate public programming.
  • Support park community partners with development, events, outreach, publicity and fundraising.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence for the Park Administrator.

Job description

*ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT FULL-TIME ANNUALLY PAID PARKS EMPLOYEES* At 2,772 acres, Pelham Bay Park is the largest park in the city. Pelham Bay Park contains a variety of expansive natural areas, in addition to extensive recreational facilities that draw park patrons not only from the borough but also the larger metropolitan region.

Major Responsibilities
  • Under general direction, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, work closely with the Administrator for Pelham Bay Park, Operations office, staff and other Agency divisions to coordinate purchasing, volunteer projects, public programs and community initiatives consistent with parks priorities.
  • Plan and oversee 30+ annual volunteer events, including large scale corporate projects with 100-200+ participants, and coordinate staffing, tools, materials, safety requirements, permits and other event logistics.
  • Manage volunteer registration, communications, waivers, participation records, service hours and program outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with corporations, nonprofits, schools, civic organizations, community groups and other stakeholders.
  • Lead volunteer projects, including shoreline cleanups, invasive species removal, trail maintenance, beautification and other improvement activities.
  • Conduct community outreach and promote volunteer opportunities, public programs, meetings and special events.
  • Track and report program metrics, including volunteer participation, service hours, project outcomes and community impact.
  • Serve as liaison with Purchasing, Accounting and vendors, coordinating purchase orders, account setup and modifications and maintaining accurate financial reports.
  • Create yearly budget with Administrator and prudently manage resources within those budget guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Park Administrator and Special Events team to plan, implement, promote and evaluate public programming.
  • Support Park community partners with organizational development, events, outreach, publicity and fundraising activities.
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, and other administrative materials for the Park Administrator and perform related duties as assigned.

Fees: Hired candidates will be subject to a processing fee between $40.00 to $101.00 based on the salary range of title. Hired candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to a $104.50 background check fee.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
Preferred Skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies and familiarity with Bronx neighborhoods.
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays, as needed.
  • Valid New York State driver’s license.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
