Job summary

City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation in the Bronx is seeking a Community Coordinator to support Crotona Park operations, events, and community engagement. The position is open to current full-time Parks employees and requires strong coordination with partners and residents.

The role emphasizes outreach, event processing, volunteer coordination, and administrative tasks to enhance park experiences.

Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 is preferred.
  • Valid New York State driver’s license may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily technical and logistical support for the maintenance and operations of Crotona Park.
  • Conduct outreach to local groups and assist with developing a constituency for the park.
  • Process and review all Special Events applications for approval and use Citywide Event Management System (CEMS) to process applications. Communicate frequently and follow up with applicants to ensure understanding of Park Rules & Regulations.
  • Oversee and coordinate volunteer projects; maintain accurate records of volunteer activities and waivers; track volunteer supplies and equipment; and maintain updated inventory records.
  • Use the Parks web calendar to enter Crotona Park-produced public events to ensure programs and stewardship opportunities are properly accounted for. Ensure programs are shared through appropriate park newsletters, the Parks website, and the Community Board. Assist with staffing priority events on weekdays, nights, and weekends as needed.
  • Provide administrative support to the Crotona Park administrative office on a daily basis, as needed.
  • Provide excellent customer service to the public in person, via email, and by phone. Assist the Administrator with coordinating resolutions to issues requiring immediate attention.
  • Manage special projects, as needed, to improve the public’s overall experience with Crotona Park.
  • Assist the Administrator with identifying grant opportunities and updating Crotona Park maps and guides.
  • Contact and work with vendors to obtain reasonable pricing for services, equipment, and supplies; coordinate deliveries; and work closely with the Administrator to meet purchasing needs.

Responsibilities
  • Under general direction, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment provide daily technical and logistical support for the maintenance and operations of Crotona Park, a 127-acre flagship park in the Bronx.
  • Under the supervision of the Crotona Park Administrator, conduct outreach to local groups and assist with developing a constituency for the park. Assist with meetings and support community groups and activities sponsored by the Administrator and park partners, including Friends of Crotona Park, the New York Junior Tennis League (NYJTL) and the Crotona Park Dog Run Group.

Work Location: Bronx

Fees: Hired candidates will be subject to a processing fee between $40.00 to $101.00 based on the salary range of title. Hired candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to a $104.50 background check fee.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
