Job summary

SEPTA in Philadelphia seeks a Project Designer (Track Engineering) to assist with design functions for track systems. You will support design reviews, develop alignment designs using Bentley software, and coordinate with field forces for installation.

The role requires a high school diploma and extensive design/engineering experience, with strong communication skills and proficiency in MS Office. A PA PE license adds value and salary starts at competitive levels.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma required with extensive design, engineering or construction experience.
  • Eleven years applicable experience or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
  • Experience developing and managing projects is required.
  • Proficient in MS Office; track design experience in Bentley software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide track engineering analysis and design reviews.
  • Create conceptual, preliminary and final track designs using Bentley/MicroStation.
  • Write specifications and review designs for track devices and systems.
  • Coordinate design plans for in-house and 3rd party forces.
  • Review and witness factory testing; ensure safety and standards compliance.

Starting Salary: Up to $90,688.00

Additional $5,000 salary increase for having a Pennsylvania PE License

Overall Description

This position is responsible for assisting through design functions as part of the team to implement Track Engineering. This position is responsible for undertaking engineering assignments that are considered to be of “normal complexity” in size and scope. This position is further responsible to provide technical support and direction for engineering activities including the definition and coordination for design review and implementation, establishing inspection plans, program/project development and consulting, statistical methods, audits, and continuous improvement approaches to ensure activities are consistent with SEPTA mission values and goals.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Provides track engineering analysis, detailed design reviews.
  • Provides conceptual, preliminary and final designs of tracks systems and designs for Installation by field forces and or third parties utilizing Bently software for alignment designs and other CAD programs.
  • Writes specifications and Request for Proposals and review designs for all track devices and systems including preparing proof of concept for all new track designs and systems.
  • Generates and coordinates design plans and specifications for in-house and 3rd party forces.
  • Reviews, monitors and performs oversight and witnessing of factory testing of track, elements and subsystem equipment and work in progress. Takes necessary action to correct unusual equipment operations and recommend standard preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Conducts preliminary engineering site walks with various parties, and reviews and approves third party signal and communications construction drawings and specifications.
  • Designs various types of special track work systems.
  • Manages the performance of 3rd party technical services including CSEC's, GEC's and other technical services.
  • Initiates, upgrades and implements design standards to be employed in track.
  • Reviews and approves 3rd party designs and construction documents for conformity with established standards.
  • Generates written memoranda, technical reports, audits, etc. in professional, effective manner.
  • Participates in periodic review of drawings and specifications.
  • Provides, promotes, and enforces safe working conditions in accordance with accepted safety practices and procedures.
  • Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications And Experience
  • High School graduate and eleven (11) years relevant experience in Design, Engineering or Construction required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience (two years of related experience equating to one (1) year of formal post high school education) may be considered in lieu of the above requirements.
  • Experience in developing and managing projects required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications and MicroStation, required.
  • Valid driver’s license, required.
  • Track design experience in Bently software, required, including alignments in Bentley.
