Job description

Our CFO Services team acts as the finance function for growing companies most of them manufacturers in the $10M–$50M revenue range, plus a mix of clients in other industries. The Project Accountant is the operational engine behind that team.

We are looking for a Project Account to join our CFO Services Advisory team. In this role, you will take ownership of the accounting infrastructure and financial integrity that support client advisory recommendations, giving you meaningful influence over how each client’s finance function operates. Rather than focusing on staff supervision, you will onboard new clients, design and implement sustainable monthly close processes, collaborate with client accounting teams, provide hands‑on accounting support when needed, and develop budgets and cash flow forecasts that inform strategic decision‑making. Because every client engagement is different, success requires the ability to assess each client’s needs and build reliable, efficient accounting processes that create a strong foundation for advisory services.

This role reports to the CFO advisors on each engagement and works across a portfolio of clients simultaneously.

This is a remote position, with preference given to candidates located in the southeastern United States. Work hours will be in the eastern time zone.

As Project Accountant, you will have the opportunity to do the following:
Client Onboarding and Process Design
  • Lead the accounting onboarding for new CFO Services clients: chart of accounts review and mapping, opening balance validation, system access, and historical cleanup.
  • Assess the client's existing accounting environment (QuickBooks, ERP, other bolt‑on tools) and recommend what to fix, replace, or leave alone.
  • Design and document the monthly close: close calendar, checklist, ownership matrix, and workpaper templates.
  • Build reusable onboarding and close templates that make the next engagement faster than the last.
Working with Client Accounting Staff
  • Partner with on‑site bookkeepers, accountants, and controllers and train them on the close process, review their work, and close capability gaps.
  • Serve as the day‑to‑day accounting resource for client staff between close cycles.
  • Partner with client process owners to identify and implement improvements in a collaborative, respectful manner.
Interim Bookkeeping and Full‑Cycle Close
  • Step in as the client's interim bookkeeper or accountant during turnover, growth, or a coverage gap.
  • Own full‑cycle close where the engagement calls for it: recurring and adjusting journal entries, accruals, prepaid amortization, depreciation, and all balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Run AP and AR: coding, approval routing, payment runs, invoicing, cash application, and collections follow‑up.
  • Prepare month‑end reporting packages for CFO advisor review, on a committed calendar.
Manufacturing Accounting (Majority of the Portfolio)
  • Inventory accounting: cycle count and physical count reconciliation, roll‑forwards, and reserve entries.
  • Job and project costing: WIP tracking, job cost accuracy, and labor and overhead application.
  • Standard cost environments: post and reconcile purchase price, labor, and overhead variances.
  • Tie ERP inventory and production subledgers back to the general ledger.
Budgets, Forecasts, and Analysis
  • Build and maintain annual budgets and reforecasts alongside the CFO advisors.
  • Build, maintain, and update rolling 13‑week cash flow forecasts — including explaining what moved versus the prior week and why.
  • Support budget‑to‑actual variance analysis, KPI reporting, and EBITDA and cash flow bridges.
  • Assemble and validate the data behind board, lender, and owner reporting packages.
Tools and AI
  • Work at an advanced level in Excel: pivot tables, lookups, graphs, and building models others can use.
  • Leverage AI tools to streamline reconciliation, data cleanup, documentation, and analysis while applying sound judgment and thorough review to ensure accuracy.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to automate repetitive tasks and improve efficiency.
The Successful Candidate Will Bring
  • 5–8 years of full‑cycle accounting experience, including primary ownership of month‑end close.
  • Hands‑on experience in QuickBooks (Online and Desktop) and at least one true ERP (NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Sage 100/300, Acumatica, Dynamics 365 Business Central, Epicor, Global Shop, JobBOSS, or Fishbowl).
  • Advanced Excel skills, including building and maintaining budget or forecast models.
  • Experience building or materially improving a close process, not just executing one someone else designed.
  • Comfort working directly with client accounting staff and owners.
  • Ability to work effectively in evolving environments where processes and documentation are still being developed.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, or equivalent experience.
Experience We Will Value
  • Manufacturing, distribution, or job‑shop accounting experience including inventory, WIP, or standard costing.
  • Cash flow forecasting experience, particularly rolling 13‑week forecasts.
  • Public accounting, outsourced accounting, or other multi‑client experience.
  • Multi‑entity or consolidated close experience.
  • Practical experience applying AI tools to accounting work.
  • Familiarity with AP automation and expense tools (Bill.com, Ramp, Expensify) and sales tax platforms (Avalara).
  • Process documentation, Lean, or continuous improvement background.
How You Work
  • You reconcile because you want the number to be right, not because a checklist told you to.
  • Self‑directed. You can run a client's month, and a client's onboarding, without daily direction.
  • You can tell a client's bookkeeper their process needs to change and keep the relationship intact.
  • Operationally curious. You want to know why inventory moved, not just that it did.
  • You switch between clients, systems, and problem types several times a day.
As An Employee Of James Moore, You Can Expect
  • A career with room to keep growing. Competitive compensation along with opportunities for continued professional development, training, and career advancement.
  • Flexibility in how work fits into your life. Flexible schedule options, paid parental leave, and a summer schedule.
  • Time away that we expect you to actually use. Flexible PTO with a minimum expectation of at least two weeks away from work each year, including one consecutive week.
  • Meaningful time to recharge. Twelve paid holidays, including a full week of winter break in December.
  • Strong health coverage. Two comprehensive healthcare options, along with dental and vision insurance for full‑time employees.
  • A meaningful retirement contribution. James Moore contributes 4–5% annually to your 401(k), regardless of your personal contribution.
