Job summary

SG Contracting, Inc. is seeking a Project Accountant to support the financial operations of construction projects. You'll work closely with Project Managers and the Controllers to maintain accurate job-cost information and forecasting.

You should have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field and 1–3 years of accounting experience, with strong Excel and accounting software proficiency. This role emphasizes collaboration, accuracy, and timely reporting across project teams.

• Ensure labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor expenses are allocated to projects.
• Manage the project accounting lifecycle from creation through invoicing, AR, WIP, and closeout.
• Prepare and post journal entries and reconciliations.
• Support month-end and year-end close activities.
• Maintain general ledger and internal controls.
• Review subcontractor invoices, POs, change orders for accuracy and coding.
• Process vendor invoices and manage pay applications and liens.

SG Contracting is looking for a Project Accountant to join our team and support the financial operations of our construction projects. This role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys more than working behind the numbers. The Project Accountant works closely withProject Managers, the Controller, and the Assistant Controller to maintain accurate job-cost information, monitor project financial activity, support forecasting, and ensure projects are financially organized from creation through closeout. The right candidate will bring strong accounting fundamentals, attention to detail, organization, and the ability to build effective relationships with project teams and internal and external stakeholders. Construction or general contracting experience is a plus, but we are also interested in accounting professionals who are eager to apply their skills in a project-based environment.

What You'll Do

Project Accounting & Job Cost

• Maintain accurate job-cost records and financial transactions for assigned projects.
• Interact daily with Project Managers and project teams to track costs, commitments, budgets, and financial activity.
• Support job-cost reporting, variance analysis, and project forecasting.
• Ensure labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor expenses are accurately allocated to projects.
• Manage the project accounting lifecycle from project creation and budgeting through invoicing, accounts receivable, work in process, and closeout.

General Accounting

• Prepare and post journal entries and account reconciliations.
• Support month-end and year-end close activities.
• Maintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy of financial transactions.
• Assist with internal and external financial reporting requirements.
• Maintain organized financial documentation and support internal controls.
• Review subcontractor invoices, purchase orders, and change orders for accuracy, compliance, and proper coding.
• Process vendor invoices, match purchase orders, and verify receiving documentation.
• Manage subcontractor pay applications, lien waivers, certificates of insurance, and retention tracking.
• Collaborate with Project Managers to prepare monthly owner pay applications, including AIA G702/G703 or standard billing formats.
• Monitor outstanding receivables and collections.
• Support project teams with timely financial information and reporting.
• Identify opportunities to improve the billing cycle and project accounting processes.
• Serve as a financial and accounting liaison between project and accounting teams.
• Build strong, customer-focused relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Communicate financial information clearly and effectively with project teams.

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 1 to 3 years of accounting experience.
• Construction or general contracting experience is a plus.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and job-cost accounting principles.
• Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with Project Managers and cross-functional teams.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a project-driven environment.
