Position Summary

The RENEWInstitute seeks an experienced academic, nonprofit, or public sector administrator to serve as the GLRC STREAM Program Manager and:

  • Liaise and develop professional relationships with DEC program managers and other NYS public sector stakeholders; federal and binational entities and policy makers; and scientists and senior-level administrators from the 18 constituent universities within the consortium.
  • Organize and oversee all aspects of the consortium's annual conference and workshops (reserving space, ordering supplies, renting PA equipment, developing agenda, etc.).
  • Administer the GLRC small grants program, including development and dissemination of requests for proposals; organization and oversight of external reviewers; announcement of awards; oversight of fund distribution; and tracking awardee research progress.
  • Oversee a NYS-wide research internship program for undergraduates and graduate students at the consortium's 18 constituent universities, including application announcements; application review; placement announcement; and troubleshooting student/host entity challenges that may arise.
  • Manage, record, disseminate and warehouse GLRC STREAM content from in-person seminars, symposia, and conferences.
  • Serve as liaison between consortium researchers (particularly those awarded GLRC STREAM seed funding) and EarthEd.
  • Prepare annual work plans for the consortium.

The Great Lakes Research Consortium (GLRC) comprises 18 New York State universities that pursue environmental research about Great Lakes ecosystems. Funded by New York's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the GLRC's relaunch under the leadership of the University at Buffalo is called Strengthening Research, Education, and Aquatic ecosystem Management (GLRC STREAM). A project of Research and Education in Energy, Environment and Water Institute (RENEW) at UB, GLRC STREAM leverages existing institutional expertise, infrastructure, and partnerships across New York State (NYS).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree Post-baccalaureate (Master's, PhD, JD) degree in environmental engineering, physical/natural sciences, law, planning, public policy, or another relevant degree program.
  • At least 3 years of university, public sector, and/or nonprofit program management experience with progressive expansion of responsibilities.
  • Educational background and work experience with Great Lakes (GL) ecosystems, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Self-starter who enjoys leading teams and working with colleagues to tackle environmental challenges.
  • Polished interpersonal and public speaking skills; capacity to resolve disagreements with diplomacy and tact.
  • Resourceful systems thinker who tends to identify potential problems and preempt them via careful planning.
  • Ability and willingness to travel beyond the Buffalo-Niagara region to run events at other campuses in the consortium.
  • The education and experience requirements may be satisfied by an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Post-baccalaureate degree (Master's, PhD, JD)
  • 5+ years of related experience with progressive expansion of responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with NYS research institutes, oversight committees, and key figures in GL environmental stewardship.
  • Prior experience launching or managing a complex, multi-site project or contributing to a social enterprise start-up.
  • Strong project management skills, including familiarity with PM software and fastidious attention to detail.
