Job summary

Armed Services YMCA is actively seeking a Program Lead to facilitate family and youth enrichment programs, including Afterschool and Camp Hero, in San Diego. You will work under the Program Director in the Family & Youth Enrichment department, coordinating activities while maintaining administrative tasks and reporting.

The role emphasizes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility for military families.

Qualifications

  • Minimum: at least 6 units of Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Child Development (CD), Psychology, Sociology, Recreation or related field.
  • Experience facilitating children’s programs and/or working in a nonprofit setting.
  • Familiarity with the military population or equivalent socio‑economic group.
  • Preferred: CA Child Development Permit and/or a BA in a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfill program and special event responsibilities identified by the Program Director.
  • Facilitate programs with intention and purpose and ensure program goals are met.
  • Provide high‑quality programs using current teaching techniques and SOPs; complete attendance, reports, timecards, and other admin tasks.
  • Be a good steward of funds and promote leadership and gratitude.
  • Collaborate with families and community partners to support youth development and healthy living.
  • Maintain data for evaluations and inform program enhancements.

Status: Non-Exempt, Part-Time $22.00/hr

Job Title: Program Lead

Reports to: Program Director, Family & Youth Enrichment

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Program Director of the Family and Youth Enrichment department, the Program Lead is primarily responsible for facilitating programs focused on family and youth enrichment with an emphasis on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The programs include Afterschool Achievement Academy, Toddler Achievement Academy, Operation Hero, Camp Hero, Operation Little Learner, and potential support for special events. Duties include working closely with the Program Coordinators to ensure that program needs are being addressed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Fulfill program and special event responsibilities identified by the Program Director.
  • Facilitate programs with intention and purpose. Conduct all activities to ensure that the goals and objectives of each program are met.
  • Provide high-quality programs using current teaching techniques and FYE Standard Operating Procedures. Fulfill Administrative requirements outlined in the manual, including completion of program attendance, incident documentation, program reports, timecards, mileage and petty cash requests, monthly statistics, and special projects as feasible.
  • Be a good steward of agency and grant funds, promote cause-driven leadership and the attitude of gratitude.
  • Be available for families seeking services with a general working knowledge of all ASYMCA programs and services.
  • Complete statistical reporting and periodic program evaluations and use data to inform program enhancements.
  • Able to evaluate programs using available data. Support the Program Manager in the grant application and fund generation by providing ASY stories, participant photos, and other activities as appropriate.
  • Actively participate in scheduled meetings, team implementation of FYE events, office space improvements, and program development.
  • Monitor and organize program supplies and equipment.
  • Implementation and facilitation of programs that support the needs and well-being of the military family in terms of Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.
  • Work collaboratively interdepartmentally and with military and civilian organizations to provide high-quality programs/events that benefit military members and their families.
  • Maintain professionalism by administering both verbal and written correspondence in a timely manner. Supports other departments as schedule permits. Maintains professional boundaries with program participants and FYE staff.
  • Follow uniform policy; maintain professional demeanor when representing the ASYMCA.
  • Complete statistical reporting in a timely manner and in accordance with FYE department Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Ensure the YMCA’s core values (responsibility, respect, caring, and honesty) are incorporated into the facilitation and programming curriculum. Demonstrates the YMCA Leadership Competencies.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Evening or weekend work as required.
Interaction

This position may include interaction with donors, potential donors, program participants, volunteers, partners, ASYMCA SD Board and staff, and other community individuals.

Supervisory Responsibilities

No staff supervisory responsibilities.

Education/Years Experience

Minimum: At least 6 units of Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Child Development (CD), Psychology, Sociology, Recreation or related field. Experience facilitating children’s programs and/or working in a similar capacity for a nonprofit organization. Familiarity with the military population or equivalent socio-economic group.

Preferred: Valid CA Child Development Permit (Teacher, Master Teacher, Site Supervisor, or Program Director) and/or a B.A. degree from an accredited university or college in Child Development, Social Service, Child Care, Family Resources, Education or a comparable course of study.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of nonprofit organizational practices.
  • A professional demeanor with an aptitude for analytical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Responsible, well organized, and demonstrate initiative.
  • Proficiency in Windows, Excel, Microsoft Word.
  • Must be accurate and detail-oriented, possess strong organizational and time management skills, and have the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a complex and fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, organizational, and public speaking skills.
Tools and Equipment Used

Standard office equipment and machines such as telephones, personal computers, multi-function copy machines, and 10‑key calculator.

Licenses/Certifications

Must have reliable transportation and possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record, including proof of personal vehicle insurance coverage and insurability under the organization’s insurance carrier standards. Must either possess or be able to obtain Pediatric and Adult CPR and First Aid Certification.

Physical, Mental & Environmental Requirements
  • Work in an office setting and occasionally travel to other locations in San Diego County.
  • Sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, and use hands, arms, and legs for dexterity, balance, and climbing stairs frequently. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods.
  • Occasionally lift, carry, and balance objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Pull and push objects such as file drawers and supplies.
  • Prioritize and multi‑task work and projects requiring good memory, concentration, and analytical thinking.
  • Occasionally operate office equipment and machines safely and recognize and abate safety hazards within the workplace.
  • Must be able to hear and see, including peripheral vision and color distinction, and read and communicate verbally and in writing frequently with a wide range of people from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
