This position works as part of a team to assist in activities across classrooms, kitchens, buses, and/or to serve as a disabilities aide as needed. The role includes responsibilities similar to classroom aide, bus monitor, janitor, kitchen aide, and disabilities aide, supporting children with and without disabilities. The position may be reassigned to various locations as necessary for program operations. Content area training and support are provided by relevant staff members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Classroom Aide: Assist staff with classroom activities, outdoor trips, meal supervision, and maintaining a clean environment. Support program needs, including event participation and classroom material preparation. Serve as a substitute in the absence of teachers.
- Janitorial Aide Services: Maintain cleanliness by emptying trash, sanitizing surfaces, and performing light yard work or snow removal. Serve as janitor when needed.
- Kitchen Aide: Handle food preparation, serving, cleaning, inventory, and safety checks. Assist with food service operations, including documentation and sanitation, and support staff in meal-related activities.
- Disabilities Aide: Work with children with disabilities, supporting individual plans and following professional guidance.
- General Duties: Attend workshops, meetings, and training; understand program standards and regulations; promote Head Start in the community; maintain confidentiality; adhere to policies and safety standards.
- Supervision: Supervise assigned staff and volunteers.
- Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
- Basic understanding of working with preschool children and food sanitation.
- Effective communication skills, including some bilingual ability (English/Spanish preferred).
- Physical ability to lift up to 40 pounds and work in various environments.
- Ability to follow directions, maintain confidentiality, and work collaboratively.
Qualifications
- Minimum age: 18 years old. High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
- Within 90 days of employment, obtain first aid and pediatric CPR certification, TB screening, and a health exam.
- Preferred: Bilingual (English/Spanish or other languages).
- Valid driver’s license and insurability for positions involving transportation.
Working Conditions
- Work may involve lifting, outdoor activities, and exposure to communicable diseases.
- Moderate to loud noise levels; frequent standing, walking, and bending.
- Some evening and weekend work may be required for events and meetings.
