Job description

The Professional Physician Coder accurately and efficiently accesses physician billing and Health Information Systems to gather necessary records for coding and billing physician and/or physician extender services. This is an entry-level professional physician coding role.

Responsibilities include:

1. Review medical records and code physician services using current ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS classifications.
2. Code diagnoses, co-morbidities, complications, procedures, supplies, materials, injections, and drugs.
3. Assist the Central Business Office in follow-up of patient accounts to maximize reimbursement, including handling insurance denials.
4. Notify supervisors of any compliance violations discovered during reviews.
5. Communicate effectively with physicians, office staff, and the coding team.
6. Utilize departmental resources to ensure accurate coding.
7. Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to attendance policies and applicable standards.
8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology; preferred an associate degree with medical office billing.
• Experience: Entry-level physician coding experience required; prior physician practice experience preferred.
• Licensure/Certification: One of the following certifications required: CPC (minimum CPC-A), CCS, CCS-P, or CMC.
