Job summary

Evolve Psychiatry is seeking an experienced Professional Medical Coder to join our behavioral health practice in Massapequa, NY. You will review documentation and assign CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes, ensuring accuracy and payer compliance.

You will evaluate E/M coding, psychiatry and psychotherapy codes, identify errors, and provide guidance to clinicians and staff. Stay current with CMS, Medicare/Medicaid, and commercial payer requirements.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional medical coding experience.
• Experience coding for psychiatry or behavioral health preferred.
• Strong CPT, ICD10CM, HCPCS knowledge.
• Certified coder required (CPC, CCS, COC or equivalent).
• Experience reviewing provider documentation and conducting audits.
• Knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid and payer requirements.
• Ability to explain coding to providers.
• Experience with EHRs and practice management systems.

Responsibilities

• Review clinical documentation and assign accurate CPT, ICD10CM, and applicable HCPCS codes.
• Ensure coding is supported by provider documentation and meets payer and regulatory requirements.
• Review E/M coding for accuracy and appropriate level selection.
• Review psychiatry and psychotherapy coding, including codes such as 99212-99215, 90833, 90836, 90837.
• Identify coding errors, inconsistencies, undercoding, overcoding, and documentation deficiencies.
• Provide guidance to providers and administrative staff regarding proper coding and documentation.
• Stay current on CMS, Medicare/Medicaid, and commercial payer guidelines.
• Assist with coding audits and compliance reviews.
• Research coding-related denials and recommend corrective action when appropriate.
• Help develop and maintain internal coding policies and best practices.
• Work closely with billing, management, and clinical teams to improve coding accuracy and reimbursement.
• Maintain strict HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality.

We are looking for someone with strong knowledge of medical coding, documentation requirements, and insurance guidelines who can help ensure our services are coded accurately, compliantly, and efficiently.

The ideal candidate has experience coding for psychiatry, behavioral health, or other outpatient medical specialties and is comfortable reviewing provider documentation and identifying coding or documentation concerns.

Responsibilities

Qualifications

• Previous experience with psychiatry, behavioral health, or mental health coding strongly preferred
• Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD10CM, HCPCS, and E/M coding guidelines
• Professional coding certification REQUIRED, such as CPC, CCS, COC, or equivalent
• Experience reviewing provider documentation and conducting coding audits
• Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer requirements
• Strong understanding of coding compliance and documentation standards
• Ability to clearly explain coding requirements and provide constructive feedback to providers
• Experience with electronic health records and practice management systems; eClinicalWorks (eCW) experience is a plus
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with clinical, billing, and administrative teams
