Job summary

SOCOTEC is looking for an experienced Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) to lead the Survey Department in Mechanicsburg, PA. This role entails managing operations, mentoring staff, and ensuring technical quality.

Qualified candidates will possess a PLS license in Pennsylvania and 8+ years of surveying experience. Responsibilities will include overseeing the preparation and review of various surveys and coordinating multidisciplinary projects. We are seeking an experienced Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) to lead and grow our Survey Department in our Mechanicsburg, PA office. This leadership role is responsible for managing survey operations, overseeing staff, ensuring technical quality, and supporting business development efforts across transportation and land development projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the Survey Department, including field crews and office staff
• Oversee workload planning, scheduling, and resource allocation
• Mentor and develop junior survey staff and technicians
• Establish and maintain department standards, procedures, and QA/QC practices
• Provide responsible charge and signing/sealing of survey deliverables
• Oversee preparation and review of boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction, and as-built surveys
• Ensure compliance with Pennsylvania standards and client requirements
• Coordinate with engineering and environmental teams on multidisciplinary projects
• Support PennDOT and municipal project requirements
• Assist with proposals, scope development, and fee estimates
• Develop and maintain client relationships and identify growth opportunities

Required Qualifications

• Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license in Pennsylvania (required)
• Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or related field (preferred)
• Minimum 8+ years of progressive surveying experience, including leadership responsibilities
• Strong knowledge of boundary law and surveying principles
• Familiarity with Pennsylvania survey standards and PennDOT requirements
• Proficiency with survey software (Carlson, Trimble Business Center, Civil 3D)
• Experience with CADD platforms (AutoCAD/Civil 3D; MicroStation a plus)
• Experience with GPS, total stations, and data collectors

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience managing survey teams and multiple concurrent projects
• Familiarity with transportation and infrastructure projects
• Existing relationships with PennDOT, municipalities, or regional clients
