Professional Intern – Career Services

UNM Career Services is seeking a highly motivated candidate for the position of Professional Intern. This role is ideal for individuals with a strong interest in career advisement, professional development, human resources, training and development, student affairs in higher education, or related fields. It offers hands‑on experience in program planning and development, cross‑campus collaborations, informational presentations and training, short and long‑term planning, and supports the overall goals of Career Services.

UNM Career Services adheres to the principles and standards of the National Career Development Association (NCDA) code of ethics in all aspects of the role, maintaining confidentiality, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, and complying with professional conduct guidelines in interactions with clients, colleagues, and the UNM community.

The professional internship is designed to provide on‑the‑job training and experience to current students or recent graduates. The intern will learn to coach, mentor, train, and advise students on the career development process.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides entry‑level services under the supervision of more senior staff.
  • Undertakes or participates in projects and programs that develop support skills appropriate to the needs of Career Services.
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of projects and initiatives.
  • Interacts directly with students, employers, staff, faculty, and community partners.
  • Receives guidance, training, and mentoring from professional personnel.
  • May provide day‑to‑day guidance and support to student employees and/or interns within area of specialty.
  • Performs miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Knowledge of or familiarity with concepts in Communication, Journalism, English, Psychology, Business with Human Resources focus, Educational Leadership, Organization, Information, and Learning Sciences or related field.
  • Entry‑level knowledge and skills at the Bachelor's or Master's level in these fields.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex, detailed instructions.
  • Project planning skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications

Must have obtained a Bachelor's or higher level degree no more than 24 months prior to the date of hire; if the degree was obtained more than 24 months prior, the individual must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's (or higher level) degree program. No previous work experience required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Communication, Journalism, English, Psychology, Business with Human Resources focus, Educational Leadership, Organization, Information, or Learning Sciences.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Familiarity with Handshake or willingness to gain familiarity quickly.
  • 1–3 years of experience writing/editing promotional and informational materials.
  • 1–3 years of experience teaching, training, tutoring, coaching, and/or presenting information to individuals or groups.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must present transcripts prior to a formal offer being extended.
  • Employees working in patient care or clinical areas must comply with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • This is a fixed‑term position, typically up to 24 months.
Pay

Hourly: $18.81 – $21.09
